Red blotches round her mouth

Hi all.

Currently doing BLW with my daughter who just turned 8mo, started late as I wasn't ready as yet haha!

But every food she self feeds, she ends up with red blotches round her mouth... has this happened to anyone else? If I feed her, she doesn't get it... first time mum, probably nothing I guess hahaha!

Any advice appreciated ❤️

IMO that sounds very much like a food allergy. I would see your GP and request a referral for allergy testing. In the meantime keep a detailed diary of exactly what she is eating and when she gets any symptoms.

Does it happen whilst she's eating or after she's finished @NaatQ968?

Oh dear. This does sound like a food allergy (unless it’s just acidic foods like tomato, pineapple, peach, orange etc?).

This is how we found out my daughter had allergies. Proceed very carefully. Don’t give anything she has reacted to again until you have seen a GP. reactions are typically worse on the second exposure to a food.

Familiarise yourself with the most common allergens. Introduce goods one at a time, for 3 days before untroducing another.

Also familiarise yourself with the symptoms of anaphylaxis and (Any signs of respiritory distress or sudden sleepiness with a reaction e. Any coughing, mouth swelling, neck swelling, noisy breathing or excessive snottiness, then get to a hospital).

If she doesn’t get it when you feed her then it wouldn’t make sense to be an allergy but I wouldn’t rule it out. It might be that she spends a lot of time rubbing the food around her mouth rather than it going straight like when you feed her. It could possibly be causing a bit of irritation. Without seeing the redness it’s difficult to say. Probably is just normal weird baby stuff but definitely talk to your gp if you’re worried.

I say this as an allergy mum, keep an eye out but this sounds like classic contact reaction to me I.e not an allergic reaction.

Does it go away quickly without treatment?

My son used to get this, I think it was a mild intolerance of some kind. He outgrew it around 13 months and has no allergies now.

20 minutes later it's gone! And even when she has it, she's happy as usual, no change in behaviour
