My baby can’t be awake with out her dummy today I forgot it and she cried and cried and till she couldn’t catch her breath I had to go home and even the car ride home didn’t smooth her she screamed so hard but instantly stopped as soon as i
popped the dummy in her mouth is this normal for a 5 week old to want a dummy all the time?

Babies love to suckle. It’s their happy place. I’m assuming you fed baby first before heading home for the dummy.

emnoneya · 16/06/2023 22:09

Yes, she's 5 weeks old!

Newnamenewname109870 · 16/06/2023 22:09

Are you breastfeeding or bottle? Not that it matters but I only know about breastfeeding. I always fed first and dummy after. Often mine would prefer to breastfeed but then would love a dummy.

P0mbears · 16/06/2023 22:09

How is her feeding going? Does she breastfeed/take the bottle well?

Lelophants · 16/06/2023 22:10

Not to be ‘that person’ but just make sure she’s fed enough first

Cas112 · 16/06/2023 22:13

The baby is 5 weeks old and not 'addicted' to anything Confused

It is normal for a newborn to be dummy dependent

SpringSummerDreamer · 16/06/2023 22:13

It's a while since I've had a newborn, but please can I ask why you began with a dummy in the first place? Are you feeling strong enough now to tackle that and so nip the dummy-reliance in the bud?

GlitteryGreen · 16/06/2023 22:15

I wouldn't knock it tbh OP, I have a dummy refused and while I'm glad of it now she's a bit older, it would have been a godsend had it been able to settle her for the first few months.

Mutabiliss · 16/06/2023 22:17

Completely normal. Buy more dummies and have them stashed everywhere!

Setting · 16/06/2023 22:19

She’s not addicted, she’s a baby, nut are you sure she wasn’t hungry? Or thirsty?

PaigeMatthews · 16/06/2023 22:21

She isnt addicted to a dummy ffs.

was she hungry?

i was told not to introduce a dummy until 6 weeks. Is that old advice now?

Aquamarine1029 · 16/06/2023 22:23

A five week old is still cluster feeding. She's not addicted to anything. 😐

I think you need to get some proper guidance from a gp or paediatrician. Your baby was probably hungry.

MyFavouriteKindOfBalloon · 16/06/2023 22:26

Hungry babies aren't satisfied by a dummy.

It's fine, if it makes her happy then go with it!

LeafHunter · 16/06/2023 22:33

my son is 5months and it was recommended when he was born to wait till baby was 6wk before bringing in a dummy as it can impact feeding. You can def change the dummy association but you need to offer something else every time for baby to suckle. This might be breast or bottle, or combination.

(obv ignore if recommendations have changed)

OfMark87 · 16/06/2023 22:46

I gave both mine a dummy, it was recommended by a midwife and they both had them in the hospital before going home.
Absolute godsend!

LadyJ2023 · 16/06/2023 22:48
