Anyones baby said no to MAM but yes to something else?

Rooandtwo · 16/06/2023 21:11

We are trying to get DD to take a bottle. We have started with MAM bottles and she’s not keen but everyone else seems to have found MAM to be the end of their struggle/journey. Has anyone’s baby not got on with MAM and subsequently likes another bottle or is this an indication that there will be no success no matter what?

also, please no debate about whether there is a need/good enough reason to try a bottle. We’re trying, if it’s not to be it’s not to be.

My LO preferred the Philips Avent anti colic bottles (with the green vent in) to the mam ones!

Thisisjustmyface · 16/06/2023 22:14

All of mine used tommee tippee.

Twizbe · 16/06/2023 22:16

How old is baby?

if she’s over 6 months don’t bother with bottles and try sippy cups or 360 styles.

if she’s younger, try little amounts (oz or 2) at random points in the day to get her used to the bottle rather than full feeds.

GoldenCagedBird · 16/06/2023 22:16

Try the toddler mam bottles instead of the ones for their age.

Rainraingoaway123 · 16/06/2023 22:30

1 of mine would have mam, one only took Avent and the last wasn’t having any of that nonsense so I gave up!

bagforlifeamnesty · 16/06/2023 22:33

If she’s currently breastfed then the best ones I’ve found are the medela bottles or even just the super cheap asda/boots/Sainsbury’s own brand teats. Both mine were breastfed and neither would take MAM but we had much more success with these others.

Try tommee tippee advance coil bottles both on mine started of bf but would only take them bottles wen I stopped they are really good

LadyJ2023 · 16/06/2023 22:46

None of our 4 liked mam only tomee tepee worked with them and Fred flo tescos lol

MsPolly · 16/06/2023 22:56

Another vote for the Tommie tippee bottles but it still took some perseverance to get DD to accept them!

User1438423 · 16/06/2023 22:59

Yes, the NUK teats but only the brown latex ones not the silicone.

User1438423 · 16/06/2023 23:01

Oh and some super cheap bottles, I think from Asda or Boots. Needs to be very thin silicone teat if trying a cheapie. A lot of breastfed babies hate the firmness of the better quality silicone. The brown latex feels more like skin. Also another tip I got was to make the milk hotter than you think it should be. Breastmilk is hotter than most people warm a bottle too. Definitely worked for mine.

Porridgeislife · 16/06/2023 23:03

Lansinoh Natural Wave teats if currently breastfed.

Bobbybobbins · 16/06/2023 23:10

Getting ours off bfeeding at 6 months- rejected all teats 🙄 but got onto sippy cups then back on to bottles.

Lyla82 · 16/06/2023 23:39

My baby won't drink from Mam bottles but gets on well with Phillips Avent anti colic ones.

Rooandtwo · 17/06/2023 02:30

its lovely to wake up to some hope during the night feed ☺️ sounds like there’s a few others to try, maybe starting with avent or Tommy tippee. I’ve tried the NUK teats actually and it seemed no more natural to her but my sense is that was due to the shape - the thinner latex might have been a win I’m not sure.

She’s currently not even entertaining the bottle, as in it doesn’t seem to be to do with flow or anything, more that despite smelling or tasting the milk, the two teats we have tried have been too odd a shape to her to motivate her to try to learn iyswim. Can they really just try with one willingly having not even really given another a go? We are trying all the usual recommendations (me leaving the room, different positions etc), I’m just wanting to maintain the hope at the moment. I’m not happy to pressure or upset her for the sake of my freedom for 6 months or so, but I know it might really help me and DH and maybe even DD too if I we were all to have a little more flexibility. I know if she takes a bottle we will need to keep her hand in. And also that if I’m lucky there’s maybe there’s a little more predictability and routine to come that might grant me the sort of freedom I’m after anyway - just to go for a run or at most a swim.

re temperature, @User1438423 what temp are we talking? We are heating to 40c at the moment and I’m nervous to go hotter having no idea what’s safe. DD is 8 weeks if that matters.

DD got horrific wind using MAM. But loves their dummies, so we use those.

We were recommended the Lansinoh ones above by a lactation consultant as being the best when combi feeding, so stuck with those. Every baby has such strong preferences, it’s trial and error really.

If you joined an antenatal group, ask if anyone has a bottle brand they are no longer using which you could try, eg I gave someone my MAM ones, someone else got tommee tippee from another mum. Buying a new teat is much cheaper than the whole bottle! I wish you could buy a variety pack to try out different ones…

Namechangedforthis25 · 17/06/2023 08:44

anyone who has an issue with giving a bottle has a screw loose..

anyway our eldest (4) took to mam from day 1

we have had really issues with bottle aversion with our little baby - she has accepted mam and then not

i tried medela calma which did work but it’s very difficult to put together

so we tried tommer tipper closer to nature - took a bit of perseverance but she took it and then we were able to go back to mam in due course

romdowa · 17/06/2023 08:45

My son hated mam bottles as a new born. We had great success with nuk.

Rooandtwo · 17/06/2023 09:04

DD is quite little, 10th percentile, I wonder if that makes a difference 🤔

Our lactation consultants recommended the Lansinoh bottles with slow flow teats - they work really well. We are currently combi feeding 👍

My son was born on the 6th percentile and some bottles were definitely too big for his little mouth

QueenOfWeeds · 17/06/2023 09:36

Medela are quite dinky, they would probably be good for a small baby.

Rooandtwo · 18/06/2023 08:19

Ok well I’ve all those mentioned above in my Amazon saved for later and will start with the lansinoh because they look most erm like the nipples she’s been dealing with. We shall see 🤞🏻I’ll come back to update if we’ve any success.

Yes, the NUK teats but only the brown latex ones not the silicone.

Came here to say exactly this. Like some kind of magic.

First of all thank you for posting its comforting to hear another baby isnt into the MAM brand.

My LO was very prem, the hospital would only let me use MAM. She hated anything MAM, she struggled with the bottles...... even on the prem teat. She also rejected any dummies.

As soon as she was discharged and home we used tommee tippee cherry teat dummies ( she LOVES them) and she was stright on tommee tippee close to nature bottles, we have had no problem with them what so ever.
