Baby started to refuse milk

Hello,

im wondering if anybody has gone through anything similar.

My LO is 11 weeks old and has gone from taking 5/6oz every 4 hours to it being a struggle to getting more than 15oz in him over a 24 hour period. This has been going on for nearly 3 weeks now.

He started with what sounded like a chesty cough and so I went to see the GP who told me it wasn’t on his chest and it would clear on his own.

he has a constant cough and after feeding can try to cough to clear his throat and can be sick bringing up lots of green phlegm.

He takes the first ounce or 2 really nicely and then he will chew the teat and roll it around his mouth if he isn’t interested and it is a struggle to then get any more in him.

we have tried gaviscon as before the congestion started I wondered if he had reflux although looking back now he was taking his bottles really nicely and only spat up a little bit compared to how he is now feeding.

he is very happy in himself, always settled after taking a feed, still having wet and dirty nappies although the dirty nappies can sometimes be a bit runny.

I have also noticed he can get a slight rash on his tummy - doesn’t seem to be anywhere else but this comes and goes.

I’ve been to see the GP 3 times and also the health visitor who don’t seem to conceded and said maybe that’s enough milk for him however it is worrying me as he use to take so much lord so surely he is going to loose weight.

Hoping somebody has been through something similar and may be able to give me some advice.

Thanks.

I think your instincts are already telling you that it sounds like a CMPA. I had similar symptoms with my son with the cough, he also had chronic nasal congestion and constant conjunctivitis. He’s 4 months and from bringing him home after birth his feeding never seemed to progress as far as volume was concerned at times it even regressed to drinking 1oz a time. Around 10 weeks he started refusing sometimes for a few days intermittently and then we’ll have a good week and then regress. He was alway quite an happy baby although there was always little niggles that something wasn’t quite right. After I gave him a bottle and put him down he would wave a kick around like he had wind, he would start gaging and choking while drinking and after, milk would come up so fast it would stop him breathing for a few moments. I saw various doctors and was told contradicting things. I was told he had silent reflux and to ride it out and given gavison and then omerprazole. I was told by another gp that it was behavioural he dose not have reflux, then I was told repeatedly that it was a virus. Anti reflux milk and gavison made him worse, I refused to give him omerprazole. The gp never took it seriously cause he wasn’t losing weight even though I new eventually he wouldn’t be able to keep up with he’s growth. My instinct were telling me it was the milk, after a particularly bad week, him dropping centiles and going to the gp to be told again it was a virus again I contacted my health vistor I told her straight I know it’s a CMPA and explained the recommendation stated by The National institute for care and excellence (nice) she couldn’t argue with that. Long story short I was buying aptimil pepti one myself for 3 weeks until I won the fight with the gp to have it prescribed. He’s a different baby since the change. With your little one it’s possible that he could just be consuming what he needs but with the rash and other symptoms I think it would be worth a change of milk although I’m not a doc lol look up CMPA on the nice website. I could never understand that the doctor would prescribe medication for reflux without testing (obviously I know that it would expensive and a long waiting list) but would not change the milk as that would be an easy way of ruling out a CMPA. They diagnose by symptoms and reflux not only has the same symptoms but also is one of a CMPA dose it not make sense to rule that out first .Good luck!
