Hi my 4 week old baby who usually drinks 4-5oz every 4 hours Is now drinking 3-4oz but it’s mostly been 3 oz every 4 hours, she also has silent reflux which she was on gaviscon for but it wasn’t working well enough so dr prescribed lansoprazole for but that made her 10x worse, she’s only been on it 1 day but it hasn’t worked at all she drinks about 1-2ounces of the bottle and starts screaming, won’t drink the rest of her bottle even tho I can tell she wants it as she keeps rooting, but when I give it to her she drinks a tiny bit more and starts screaming again so I put her back on gaviscon today even tho it didn’t work that well but it’s seems better than the lansoprazole i plan to ring GP tomorrow to see if there is anything else they can do,

No advice as in similar situation, so sending unmumsnetty hugs to you. This heat isn't helping!

@Spockrates it sounds as though she may have CMPA and is hungry but the milk is hurting her stomach. Have a read of this article from Allergy UK.

If you do think it could be CMPA go to the GP in the morning and ask fir a suitable formula. Film her feeding to show them too.

It's it's hot and she's not drinking as much, look out for signs of dehydration and go straight to A&E if you think she may have it Flowers

Sounds like my son I was also told he had silent reflux. Check out symptoms of CMPA. Gavison and lanaoprazole never worked I had to fight for a specialist milk. He’s on aptimil pepti one and it’s like having a new baby. Feeding little an often helped and when things were at there worse I was feeding 1oz an hour, also check out how much your baby needs and write down amount at each feed. It’s normally 150-250mls per kg in 24 hours maybe not as much as you think. My son is 4 months and drinks 3-4oz every 2-3 hours although he’s feeding can be all over the place. He’s now happy and healthy after milk change and puts weight on each week but he’s not a lover of milk he takes what he needs 🤷‍♀️ roll on weaning

@Kcheey i
already discussed this with dr she said she doesn’t have symptoms of milk allergy because she doesn’t have blood in her poo or green poo or any sort of rash or weight loss the dr said those are the symptoms of milk allergy

I was told the same repeatedly. My son doesn’t have those symptoms either he’s main was bottle refusal. People present differently, If you have a look at the National institute for care and excellence it lists a range of symptoms if a child presents with 1 or more then a CMPA should be considered regardless of the absence of a rash or blood in poo. I have had a nightmare with doctors and I’m disgusted with how myself and baby were treated. I can’t tell you the amount of research I have done on CMPA, reflux, and the use of proton pump inhibitor such as Lansoprazole and Omeprazole in babies.
Obviously my situation is different and your babies not mine go with what your instincts are telling you. But if you’re getting nowhere and the situation gets worse consider it, doctors don’t always get it right it’s only a change of milk for two weeks and it can be ruled out. Tbh it would be better if they ruled out the allergy first with rather then prescribing strong medication for reflux that they haven’t tested for they are diagnosing by symptoms, the same symptoms of CMPA.

@Kcheey she also has very smelly poo anyone who has smelt her poo get shocked that a newborns poo could be so smelly and she gets very flatulent, which when I googled said it can be a sign of allergy but the dr said it’s common for formula fed babies to have smelly poo

babies poos are all kinds of weird and in most babies completely normal but accompanied by other symptoms can signify something else. My son also have very smelly poo going around 6 times a day with lots of flatulence. He had chronic nasal congestion, cough, sneezing, gagging and choking especially after he had a bottle but mostly he refused milk. I saw 3 different gps over the space of three months at my surgery and was given completely contradictory advice. I was told it was a virus (for 3 months 🙄) reflux, and I had to ride it out, then I was told it’s not reflux is a behavioural issue, it’s normal fussy baby. The medication they prescribe do not work because they thicken the contents of the stomach to help it stop coming back up for babies with reflux. Babies with CMPA are expelling the milk because they’re bodies rejecting it. Life was absolutely miserable I wasn’t going out I use to sleep sitting up with him. Sometimes at night time I would sit and cry because he never used to wake up for a bottle, even though I knew he had never had enough during the day. I went to the doctor and ask to change the milk which she refused to do and again told me it was a virus. I left crying and got in contact with my health visitor who recommended buying aptimil pepti one from the pharmacy. Within a week of changing milk all symptoms had gone and I had a different baby. The milk was so expensive £35 for a 800g tin and I had to fight the doctor for it in the end I wrote a formal complaint before in was given to me on prescription. It’s now been five weeks and I’m so happy!,

@Kcheey my baby also has nasal congestion but has had it since she was born as she was a c section baby so had lots of mucus I will message the health visitor see what she says I spoke to dr today and they said to just give her the gaviscon and lansoprazole at the same time

Yeah my baby had since birth also had a c section. The reflux can also cause nasal congestion by irritating the sinuses. When the milk comes up it can come through the nose just like with us. although some doctors would disagree persistent unexplained, respiratory inflammation is also listed as sign of an allergy. He used to rub his nose on me constantly like he was rooting cause it was so itchy. He also had conjunctivitis since birth. These symptoms lasted 3 months until the change of milk.
