Hi, just looking for some advice regarding my baby and her feeding routine. Been told by the HV that she is having too much milk in 24 hours but honestly don’t know what to do to try and reduce.

This is a normal routine for us:
5am - 6oz
7.30am - breakfast - toast with avocado or porridge with berries.
9am - 6oz
9.30am - nap
12 - lunch - vegetable pinwheel or pizza wrap, 1 ritz cracker, chopped tomato, strawberries and Greek yogurt
3pm - 6oz
3.30pm - nap
5pm - dinner - spag bol with broccoli, fish pie, stirfry with greek yogurt for pudding
7.30pm - 8oz
7.45pm - bed

however last night she woke at midnight and was crying, wouldn’t settle until she had milk so she had 6oz and then another feed at 5am. She is teething so wondering if last night she wanted to feed for comfort rather than hunger (she has 4 teeth coming through at once). I just don’t know how to drop a feed/if this is necessary? Any advice welcome 😊

Is she having the 5am food because she's awake and hungry? It's difficult to drop it then unless you're prepared to get up at that time and give her breakfast instead.

Also, are the mid-morning and mid-afternoon bottles a way to get her to sleep or have you tried swapping one of these for a snack and a drink?

I'd think the 9am and 3pm bottles are the ones to go. She's having food throughout the day. You can always give her some in a cup with her lunch. DD2 is 11mo and breastfed mainly but her milk intake is basically now just first thing in morning, some in a cup with her lunch, and bedtime.

Not sure why she having so many bottles in the day our twin 10 month have cereal or toast breakfast, sandwiches, salad and cake for lunch, fruit for an afternoon snack if they need it..tea be anything from spag bol, proper dinner or a quick fish fingers and chips...supper 1 weetabix each and half a sippy cup of milk and then sleep from 8pm till anywhere between 8am-9:30am

I’d give a filling snack mid afternoon instead of the milk. Then do dinner at more like 5.30/6. It’s a long wait from a 5pm dinner to bedtime- I think most people that do dinner that early are going for more like a 6.30/7 bedtime.

Yes she’s awake and hungry. Some days it’s 5 and others it’s 5.30, I don’t mind that time to be honest as I’m up for work at about 6 anyway. I have been giving milk then as she goes to nursery for 7.30 so has breakfast there but maybe I need to switch that up abit.

Thanks for the reply. She actually only turned 10 months today. Unfortunately her sleeping in til 8.30 or 9 just wouldn’t work for us as she starts nursery at 7.30 3 days a week although I will look at introducing a snack instead of milk in the mid morning/afternoon

Thanks everyone for your advice, it’s useful to get other peoples perspectives. I didn’t introduce snacks mid morning or mid afternoon as I saw a HV 3 weeks ago and she told me to stick with milk until she is closer to 1 but then the person I saw this week said I needed to be giving snacks now. Nursery are also saying they think her milk intake is fine however she has just turned 10 months today so I would like to try and reduce the milk abit and increase the food.

in nursery she does have mid morning and mid afternoon snack but then she also cries for milk aswell they said. Feels very confusing but will try and reduce milk abit now!

I'm not sure why you were told to stick to the milk first, that really doesn't fit in with current advice.

Between 10 and 12 months she should be having 400 ml/13.5 floz a day.

If she's crying for milk after the snack is it because she's hungry and needs a cup of formula or is she going for a nap and misses the sleep association?

Thank you. I have found the advice from the health visitors quite contradictory to be honest. She was only 10 months yesterday so I guess just inside that age group however my plan is to drop one of those daytime feeds over the weekend and see how she goes. Going to try with the cup too and just offer abit of milk and see if I can gradually reduce. What sort of cup would you recommend? She currently has a tumtum straw cup for water so would something similar be ok? I don’t think it’s the sleep association as she has milk at nursery then doesn’t sleep straight after although i can’t rule it out when at home so will look to fix that.

I think any cup will do. I started giving mine an open cup of milk on the bath.

They very quickly got the hang of open cups.
