1 yo suddenly rejecting solids

Hi, my 1 yo has been a good eater until his most recent vaccinations. He ate most things from a spoon and was getting the hang of feeding himself things like toast and banana strips.

He had his vaccinations and for the first time they left him with a fever, zapped of energy and very unsettled. Two days later he seemed back to normal except now when we try to feed him he has developed the habit of accepting the food, chewing it once or twice and then putting his finger in his mouth and scooping most of the food out. He does it pretty much every mouthful even with the foods that we know are his favourite.

While he was unwell I assumed he had lost his appetite but it doesn’t seem to have returned. I have managed to get him to have a few spoons of porridge, and yogurt but anything remotely chunky is being taken out of his mouth or simply refusing to eat it. I spoke to a HV who advised that side effects of the vaccinations can last several days after the fever subsides (these injections were fri PM and its now Monday PM) but I’m so worried as to how long I can leave him without a decent meal.

He is still having 2 8 oz bottles a day (was going to wean to one per day but atm I’m reluctant to lose any more calories) and water so there’s no swallowing problems.

I keep reading things like if he’s hungry he will eat, but it doesn’t give me a lot of comfort because what if he doesn’t start eating properly again? I don’t want him to lose weight.

Easier said than done but try not to stress. My daughter went through stages of smashing pouches….then nothing… carrots LOVE THEM….next day fuck off. Eat it all….eat nothing. They’re fickle things.
its only now at 19 months I have taken the attitude, don’t want your dinner? Fine….she’s on 2 bottles of milk still. They don’t starve

Hello, how is he doing? Just let him have whatever he will eat and hopefully he will come around. I am with you on not weaning if he's been eating less. Give him what he is willing to eat. And I don't know if you are open to doing this but maybe look into flower essences to help his body adapt to the vaccinations. It seems that food could be tasting "different" but I'm not a doctor and nothing medical would say anything like that. Try not to worry and keep encouraging him. Little ones are amazingly resilient and adaptive.

Forgot to mention re flower essences that you would put some drops on your hand and rub them on his temples (take care to not put near the eyes) and heart area as he'd be too young to ingest. Boab has been traditionally used for helping the body with vaccine adjustment. What I love about essences besides being natural is that if you use one that wasn't needed there's no adverse effect. If you have pets you would rub it in their ears. They are wonderful too with emotions.

If you feel ok with sharing which vaccine it was I could try to find some more helpful information.

If this doesn't resonate at all with you no worries.

Thank you both for your advice.

Today I planned to do milk and breakfast in reverse. He woke and had a bowl of his favourite porridge, and most of his banana portion! He was still picking bits out and throwing them but I tried to keep him distracted by the bits on his tray so he didn’t seem so focused on what was in his mouth. I even got him to have some cows milk from a cup for the first time!

He was very unsettled this morning so I tried some calpol incase he has more teeth coming through at the sides. The gums have been lumpy lately and he is biting on things so may be teething again.

I have been quite stressed and out of sorts lately as I’m due back at work this week and I’m quite anxious about it all so I don’t know if he could have picked up on the atmosphere?

I can’t remember exactly what the vaccinations were for, they are the routine ones done in the UK just after the first birthday. 4 separate jabs in the upper thighs and that’s now done until he is 3.

I'm so pleased to hear he's eating again! I live in the US and how nice it is that yours is done with vaccines until 3. They have us on an ongoing schedule here and it's not easy to do. I appreciate very much that you are a sensitive mum thinking about your little one and your stress of starting work again. It's a big change. I know my little girl who is 2.5 years is very sensitive like that. I've had my ups and downs. But have confidence in yourself - it's all new territory but we new mums know how to figure things out. When it's a tougher day we show we can give ourselves compassion. And we pick up and keep going and figuring it all out. You can do it. You'll look back and realize how good you did.

Don't give him chunky food he's going to spit out; puree/mashed is fine for now. he's a baby, enjoy it while it lasts and don't rush through it.

Thank you all for replying. I’m trying to relax a little after he has eaten well today and accept that there will be good and bad days but persevere and he wont go hungry.
