Spitting up on breast

Hi everyone,

My son was born 6 weeks premature. We’re home and he’s been exclusively on breast milk with a combo of breast + bottle top ups.

Now that he’s gotten stronger, we’re running into issues with him being very gassy and spitting up during feeds. Our midwives have told us to slowly reduce top ups, but it doesn’t seem to be helping. This morning he horked all over my breast while latched on.

Does anyone have any advice? Should I delatch him while on the breast to burp him?

thanks!

Yes, if you know he's taking down air then you'll need to burp him before carrying on. It's a pain, but the more frequently you try to burp them the easier it comes out. Just try it and see if it makes a difference.
This is something that gets easier as the get bigger and more efficient at feeding.

I would get baby checked for tongue tie as taking in excess air can indicate some sort of tie

Hello @Matthew54, I've not had a premature birth so don't know if the advice is different but with a full term baby, like sassy said, I'd be reading up on Tongue tie if they're gassy.

Have you found the Premature Birth section yet and is that helpful at all? Wink
