Unfinished bottles are such a worry

There is a lot of background to this, but I'll try and sum it up:

Harry was born with a heart problem and had to have open-heart surgery at 2 weeks old. Although I was keen to breast feed, he didn't have the energy and so I have been bottle feeding him a mixture of EBM and high-energy formula. As he is now nearly 6 months old, I am starting to stop the expressing and substitute SMA Gold for the breast milk. He was only 6lbs at birth (myself and my DH are both only 5ft 6) and this dropped to 5lbs after the surgery. He is now weighing 12lbs - and although he is the right length, he is pretty skinny. The HV isn't concerned, and he does gain weight every week - albeit sometimes only a couple of ounces.

Anyway, some days he will take between 750 and 800 mls of milk in a day (4 day feeds and sometimes a night feed when he wants it), but some days it is nearer 600mls. He can certainly finish a 200ml bottle with no problem - but sometimes he'll only take 110ml. As his weight is such an issue for us, I get so despondent when he takes only a small bottle. SO I was just wondering if other babies vary so much in the quantities of milk that they take per feed? I guess Harry's amounts are going to be much lower than those for a 'normal' sized baby anyway... but I guess I am just after some reassurance that he isn't doing too badly (and isn't about to suffer from dehydration!) (sorry about the ml by the way - they always used ml rather than oz at the hospital)

Hello
Have to tried offering the bottle again to him about 5 or 10 mins later after he seems to have finished? It is a very good sign if he is gaining weight so try not to worry too much. It sounds like you have had a very stressful time, I wish you all the very best for the future

My baby is 7 months old, a VERY big baby, and does slightly less milk than your son. He takes 3 bottles a day, offered 200ml in each and takes anywhere from 90-200ml. He has gone a few days with hardly taking anything. I did phone a HV to check about dehydration, and she said he would be fine and just told me to keep an eye on him to pre-spot any dehydration signs. he si now back to guzzling his milk again.

I guess that some days he is hungry, and some days not!
