Why has my expressed milk gone a bit curdled-looking?

II seem to remember that breast milk seperates. give it a swirl and should be ok. maybe google it.

60 ml is a good amout to express i think

It should be fine, the fat seperates from the watery part. give it a good shake. As long as the bottle was steralised and the milk has been kept in the fridge for no more than 48 hours.

LOL at different milk for tea and cereal - it's not just you.
My AN teacher said not to chuck curdled/separated milk - that it's just that the hind/fore milks separates and you can shake it and it's fine.
Good luck with the cup

How old is your DC Pelafina? Sorry to be nosey but my DS won't take expressed breast milk from a bottle and I was thinking about getting a cup but I don't know if he is too young (12 weeks).

BM separates like all milks do with the creamy bit at the top. We just aren't used to seeing it with cows milk anymore (unless you get the unhomogonised organic stuff like I do ).

Gently swirling it to mix is fine. Don't shake it though - ruins some of it's properties:

The 48 hours limit on fridged milk is only really for hospitalised, prem or sick babies as they are more at risk or infection. DOH guidelines state 48 hours to allow for this worst case scenario...If you baby is healthy & at home then you can store milk for up to 8 days in a fridge at 0-4 degrees (in the main compartment not the door) so yours should be fine if it was expressed only yesterday.

The best way to know if your milk has spoiled is to taste/smell some when it's fresh...and label any expressed milk so you know how old it is.

Kellymom has an excellent section on expressing, storing & re-using bm: www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/index.html

These pages from it are particularly relevant to this discussion:

sarahloumadam just to say my daughter would not take a bottle so we used a doidy cup from about three months and whilst messy at the beginning we found it didn't take her long to get used to it and to be fine drinking from it.

Thanks Jes74 that is good to know. I tried a bottle lid and he was willing but it wasn't quite the right shape for his mouth. I'll make sure he wears a bib!

Better luck next time Pelafina! It's all in the timing isn't it?
