My GP - seriously, what's the point?

I had mastitis, he said not to feed from that breast as 'the milk will have pus in it'. Luckily I knew better and ignored him, but what if I hadn't?

Now I have thrush which I'm treating with cream and gel. It's been two weeks. Went for six week check, he says to stop treating it. Didn't feel the need to examine me or to ask me any questions about the symptoms, obviously. Told me that a consultant he spoke to recently, a breast surgeon, had never heard of thrush in the breast. I explained that I also have a large crack in the affected breast which isn't healing (another symptom of thrush)and he said that's just because I'm breastfeeding, I should expect to get sore nipples, they aren't meant to be sucked on like that ( what are they meant for then?).

Now, far be it from me to question the wisdom of a member of the medical profession, but seeing this doctor is beginning to feel like a complete waste of my time. He's the only doctor in the practice - what would you do?

I'd write to the practice manager, copied to the medical director of the Primary Care Trust, pointing out this information is downright wrong and citing reputable sources - search Tiktok on here and I bet you'll find plenty.

Any other practices in your area?

WHat an idiot. I know they can talk rubbish sometimes but that is just completely wrong medical advice. Not just a badly judged opinion. I agree you should write and complain, suggest a BFing training course.

Sorry but pmsl at they aren't meant to be sucked on like that.

I saw an emergency doctor with the same problem fleacircus. He was German ( not that I have anything against Germans!) and told me to stop complaining and apply LEMON JUICE. This is what they would do in Germany and to toughen up!!! Obviously totally ignored him and waited in agony over bank holiday until my docs opened again. Complained but got nowhere. I spoke to lovely female breastfeeding doc and it got sorted. Other port of call would be health visitor to approach doc.

Hurrah managed to blag my way in to see a different GP while staying with my parents - and she actually knew what she was talking about and had no problem with prescribing the flucanazole. Finally finally I can see that the pain might end - can't wait to experience BFing without the problems having struggled on through seven weeks of constant pain, trauma and misinformation. Very excited and hoping very much that this will be the end of all the BF troubles.

Good news.

When I got over thrush, breastfeeding became an absolute joy
