Breastfeeding baby ‘gulping’ and fussing

Baby boy is nearly a month old. Breastfeeding got off to a slightly rocky start because he was very jaundiced and sleepy, so for a couple of weeks I pumped and bottle fed EBM to ‘flush’ him out, with a few breastfeeds throughout the day alongside this.

We went back to exclusive breastfeeding a week or so ago, but he seems to ‘gulp’ at the breast which means he swallows a lot of air (you can hear it in his tummy) then becomes very distressed and writhes around screaming after a feed. It takes ages to get the wind back up.

His weight gain is really good and the latch is fine (I breastfed last DC so know how it should feel etc), but it just seems like he has an uncoordinated swallow and is a noisy gulpy eater.

Any advice, please?

Could be a fast let down, mine does this sometimes, Imagine a fizzy bottle of pop and you've got that in your mouth and its all fizzed up well it's same for baby. You could express a few drops till it comes out then latch?

Manually ‘feed’ him the nipple so it’s in the right place. Assume you’ve had him checked for tongue tie?

@OutofControl3 ive wondered if it is, sometimes he pulls away and the poor boy gets water boarded 😱 I will try that, thank you

@Wenfy yes I sort of mould it then make sure he goes on right if that makes sense, he was briefly checked for tongue tie but they couldn’t get a good look so will check again, thanks

Sounds like my DS, I was told I had a fast let down. One of the recommendations was to wind mid feed. He's adjusted to it for the most part but is an incredibly gassy baby...

Tongue tie? Tracheomalacia? DS had both and it took a while to figure it out.

Try and push more breast in if possible as that will help him move his jaw. DS did this and did have a tongue tie (diagnosed as minor by the maxofacialist but major by the breastfeeding consultant) - the gulping stopped as soon as the tie was cut but we did it fairly early.

🤣 aw poor little baby,it certainly sounds like let dowm,my little boy also is very noisy can here him gulping away like hes never drank before! but he does have Tonge tie too but can freely move so they not concerned. Once he gets use to it he'll find his own way may fuss less also iv found its better if my lo feeds on a diagonal 📎 not lay flat. Hope it improves.
