My 5 month old ds has reflux, he has been on gaviscon since he was three weeks old. He is very sickly and brings up contantly throughout the day, (sleeps on towels etc). He has been slow to gain weight and has dropped from just above the 50th centile to the 9th. Recently he has started to bring up clear fluids today it was projectile ( pyloric stenois has been ruled out he has already been in hospital for tests), whats weird is that shortly after he can bring up milk, does his tummy have layers in it?. His vomit is very mucousy and today he has has a green stringy poo. Should I take him to the doctor or is this all related to reflux.

I'd say it was all related to reflux until ou mentioned the green stringy poo. Mind you I couldn't breast feed my baby so I don't know what colour poo would be normally!! I'd check out NHS direct if I were you, just for peace of mind.

My ds was in Great Ormond Street when he was 4 months with a suspected pyloric. After tests it was discovered he had a reflux disease in that he digested his milk too slowly so by the time it reached his stomach all the nutrients had evaporated. They gave him motilium and it did wonders for him. He was also under the care of a paed and a dietician for failure to thrive (went off the charts). Once he had the medicine his skin cleared up and, for the first time ever, he smelled of baby sick rather than nothing when he posseted his bf.

I would take him back to the doctor and ask for some Motilium (he will prescribe exact dose based on weight). My ds had gaviscon but it made him constipated and didn't clear up the projectile vomit as much as motilium did.

Reflux is quite common isn't it?? I wish I'd known about mumsnet when I was going through it with my ds!! He was diagnosed but I was just told that he would grow out of it which he did eventually!! He wasn't given anything for it so I suspect that he only had it mildly although it didn't seem mild whilst going through it!! My admiration to you both ls and MrsR!!

Thanks, its hard taking him out anywhere I need sooo many clothes, MrsR how does Motilium work? Wasn't sure if there was anything else you can give a bf baby.

Have you tried muslin squares?? I found they soaked up a lot!! I'll leave you alone now to discuss medicine with Mrs R as I don't have any experience at all!! Good luck, it does get better!

littlesqualker · 14/02/2008 23:09

Ha muslin squares I've lost count of how many we have I go through about five bibs per hour always seen to have a full load of bibs and muslins only at the end of the day. life is like one big laundry basket at the minute, sigh . Washing is not a problem I am so worried about the clear vomit does it mean his little stomach is empty? Will it harm him.

Is he crying? I would have thought if his tummy was empty he wouldn't be happy or settled. I don't know what the clear vomit could be or mean.... sorry I don't think I'm much help but I couldn't turn off my computer when you sound really worried!!

benfmsmum · 14/02/2008 23:18

DH has suggested giving him different milk, but maybe you've tried that already

littlesqualker · 14/02/2008 23:28

ds is not normally upset when he vomits, often find him covered in sick and smiling at me(makes me a bit sad)he gets very upset in the evening still cluster feeding and fussing.I dont think he is hungry, if he cries at all he is offered food, he feeds well but it is so hard to keep in in him. I sleep with him and he still feeds every 1-2 hours at night, think he gets most of his calories at night as I keep him on his left side and he is not so sick. Think I will take him to the doctor to keep my mind at rest. Thanks

I would if I were you, as you say it's peace of mind if nothing else! I was told by my hv that although it seems like alot comes back they actually do keep some in them. You are obviously doing a good job with him even though it is hard. my email is karenfoxpcp at btconnect dot com if you fancy a chat at anytime. I can't give you any medical help or much anything else but I can "listen" (if you can listen to an email!!) Take care and best of luck!

My ds is now 17 months and still hasn't grown out of it, although I have identified the trigger factors (yoghurt). Surprisingly he takes full fat milk (and loves it) without being ill. However, he was prescribed special milk (despite being bf) to try and get some calories in him (by the dietician) and he just pj vomit these so the dietician and paed agreed that I could completely bf him which I did for 10 months (when he decided to give up). The clear stuff is worrying as it looks like it hasn't had time to get to his stomach (like ds' illness). Definitely go to the docs and ask for motilium (dom peridon) - it is a tiny amount that I gave ds in a syringe (just 1.6m of it) and it really had an immediate affect. If the doc loathes to prescribe it, you can get it over the counter for yourself and there are details in the leaflet as to how much you need to prescribe based on weight.

TBH, my doc only took notice once he was in hospital so I wouldn't be surprised if you doc just says to continue with the gaviscon (as mine did but them took notice after he was discharged from GOSH).

Let me know how you get on at the doctors, if you want to CAT me for a chat, feel free to do so.
