I already give 14wk ds 1 bottle last thing at night and the other 4 daytime feeds are all breast. i enjoy the 7am and don't mind the 11am but the 3pm and 7pm are beginning to be a bit of a chore plus i am considering returning to work.
anyway.. my point iss..
will my milk remain if i cut out the 7pm and replace with bottle and maybe cut 3pm too.
in an ideal world i would breast feed the 7am and formula the rest. does this work or will i just dry up??

We have 5 month year old and I have mix fed. After researching I found that your breasts will make the milk you need and that you will make less if you use it less but then if you need it less that should be ok.

Wonder if spreading the breastfeeds uot may work better? Depends on when you work I guess.

Best of luck, and do whats best for you and your family. Many well wishers told me not to 'mix feed' but we find I have enough milk, that little one is happy and that it suits us.

the problem is that if i try it and it does not work i would not be able to go back to 4 feeds again and i might regret it

how come the afternoon ones are such a chore? Can you do anything to make them more relaxing?

I'm afraid that at 14wks one bf a day won't be enough to maintain your supply and you'll end up fully ffeeding, which isn't what you want... is it?

fishie · 14/02/2008 22:10

empen you are only feeding 4 times in 24 hours? gosh that sounds very far apart anyway to me for a 14wo. and yes if you only bfeed once a day your milk is very likely to dry up.

empen · 14/02/2008 22:10

he seems really uncomfortable and keeps letting go or pulling on my nipple. its really uncomfortable and frustrating. he does not do it at 7am cause he is tired and really hungry from sleeping through the night. i let him keep going for a while but sometimes give up and give him a coupld of ounces of formula.
i wonder if he has nipple confusion - he has a dummy quite a lot too

sorry, my post badly worded, didn't intend to come across thus. i meant that it doesn't sound like there is much space to replace any more bfeeds. if you've done 14weeks then it just gets better and easier after this.

empen · 14/02/2008 22:13

i am feeding 5 times.
4 breast, 1 bottle
7am
11am
3pm
7pm
11pm

he is following the 99th centile so i am sure he is getting enough milk

wow this is a good example of how each bf relationship differs! my ds fed every two hours night and day for six months and three times a day now at 2.10.

and i hope more advice will come....

MrsBadger · 14/02/2008 22:27

I'm at a loss too - a 14wo who sleeps through and feeds every 4h is way outisde my experience...

Hi Empen, I've started semi-swaddling (wrapping a blanket around) my 17wo ds because he was pushing at my breast while feeding, as well as pulling his head back etc. TBH the blanket was mainly to stop his arms getting in the way, but it also seems to calm him so he doesn't pull off so often and he tends to keep his head still! Might be worth a try; I think at this age they do start to get distracted when feeding.

empen · 15/02/2008 22:16

Thanks, I will try swaddling him during his feed. I swaddle him for bed at night and have found that if I don't he wakes up.
I do know I am lucky to have a baby that sleeps and feeds well but to be honest I have 'her who should not be named' to thank. Her routine worked for my dd (now 5) too

Just a word or reassurance about milk drying up. I've been mixed feeding for 4 weeks and find my milk still responds well to demand. Some days she may still only have one bottle, others she will have 4 but I find if I have a day of letting her BF whenever she wants and suck for as long as she wants then the next day my milk is up again. It's working well for us but the pattern we seem to have established is BF all morning and evening with FF in the middle of the day and through the night. Just wondering though if you only feed in the morning won't you be really full and uncomfortable by the next morning or does body respond accordingly. Does anyone know?

empen · 16/02/2008 21:49

He is still wiggling a lot and thrashing his head around when he feeds - he does it when he has a bottle too. Anyone know why he would do this. Its not wind cause he does it from the start. Any ideas cause I am finding it really frustrating!?
