Am going out for the first time with some girlfriends I haven't seen in AGES. DSis 3 months old and still exclusively bf. How may glasses of wine could I have on the night out? Obv I cant get plastered but it would be lovely to be able to have a few.

You're not supposed to have any -- worse than being pregnant! Babies get "hangovers" I think!

tiktok · 14/02/2008 19:25

shoo - do check archives for this, or just scroll down the threads in this folder. We discuss this a lot - at least weekly - and there may be lots of info in previous threads to help you decide

tiktok · 14/02/2008 19:26

stuffitllama - this is so not true....you are going to scare people quite unnecessarily!

sushistar · 14/02/2008 19:32

Shoo - in short, alcohol does get passed through to breastmilk in miniscule amounts, but you'd have to drink a huge amount for it to have an effect on baby. If you feel strongly that yoiur baby should have zero alcohol, don't drink, but if you feel miniscule amounts will do no harm then you can drink in sensible amounts. Lots of bfeeding mums do drink (including me), but it's a personal choice.
Alcohol leaves your milk at the same rate as it leaves your bloodstream - 1 unit per hour.
Hope that helps.

god sorry I was only trying to bump as it was in unanswered.. I know nnaaathing!

chocolateshoes · 14/02/2008 19:37

my GP actually advised me to have a drink a night whilst b/feeding. Don't forget you can also express your alcoholic milk & bin it

Mollyfloss · 14/02/2008 19:37

Could you express before drinking, then just have 2 glasses of wine and surely by the time you feed your baby again all the alcohol will be gone out of your system...?

shoobaloo · 14/02/2008 19:40

Am fine with expressing, in fact there is already some milk in the freezer - only thing is little darling won't take a bottle! I think I'll stick to hving just a couple...

Chocolateshoes, 'pumping and dumping' is pointless. If there is still alcohol in your bloodstream, the new milk your body makes will be 'alcoholic' .
If there is no alcohol left in your bloodstream, there will be no alcohol in your milk.

beautifuldays · 14/02/2008 19:43

if it was me i'd have 1 or maybe 2 small ones, have a good night

sushistar · 14/02/2008 19:43

Tiktok / hunker, can you explain and check ?I've got it right?

tiktok · 14/02/2008 19:46

Glad you've explained, stuffitllama - if you know nothing, why on earth post something daft and scary, then? How do people know you know nothing?!

Jeez.

sushi - you got it, yes

actually tiktok i was trying to help out and when I was breastfeeding I was told exactly this and when I did have a glass of wine my babies suffered the next day

so sorry things have moved on since I had my babies but at least she's got some good advice now

honestly

stuffitllama · 14/02/2008 20:04

and saying I know nothing was a joke, a pleasant way of accepting correction

chocolateshoes · 14/02/2008 21:05

Thanks Sushi! It was again my GP who told me abpout expressing! Anyway....I'd say a couple of small glasses wd be fine. You'll be so unused to having a drink that'll be enough anyhow!

sushistar · 14/02/2008 22:33

at your silly gp!

zim · 18/02/2008 00:36

i was really careful at first and drank nothing but have gradually increased my intake last few nights our 6 month old has slept through night so, knowing this info about alcohol leavingmilk when it leaves bloodstream I had more than a few glasses of wine last night. Suffice to say, my little darling decided that that was the night to go in for a lie next to mummy and feed all night!!!!!!!!!!!!OOOPS! What could I do though?anyway, he's been absolutely fine today X

sushistar · 18/02/2008 00:42

Zim, I have done a similar thing. For the first 6 weeks I drank nothing, and now ds is 11 weeks and I have had a glass of wine now and again - first half glasses, then tonight I had a whole (but small) glass. The bigger he gets the less I worry about it. It's great to have mumsnet so I can make an informed decision.
