Gassy 4 weeks old baby - when does it start getting better?

My baby is 4 weeks old and for the last 1-2 weeks is suffering with so much gas! We do bicycle like exercises a lot and lots of gas comes out but he still seems to have so much in that bothers him! It affects his sleeping from about 3 am - he is grunting and pulling legs and straining so much, it is hard to watch. We help him to pass the gas and it seems to helm but then 40 min later he starts straining again. So we just continue this cycle for the rest of the night. And then it continues throughout the day - he just falls asleep and wakes up 5 min later straining. We started gripe water yesterday - hopefully it will help a bit.

I just need some hope to keep me going - when will it start getting better? Not necessarily gone completely, but some improvement? Is it 2 more weeks? Another month?

Usually by 12 weeks it should start improving. I would try Dentinox** .

My first did this. Between 3 and 5am would be whinging in his sleep gradually building up to a cry. Couldn't wake him up, just had to work his legs to get the gas out.

Turned out I had an oversupply and he couldn't digest the foremilk, stopped when I got the hang of block feeding but also can get sorted when your milk supply gets established properly around 6 weeks.

(Not too be confused with an overactive let down, which I had with my second 🙃.)

we're on the other side of this now, it does gert better! my baby is 10 weeks and I think by 7 weeks there was a marked improvement and he now farts away lol. once they start losing that newborn scrunch and lengthen out it should get better! I also think products marketed to help are just a gimmick. We triied infacol and coleif, but honestky they're such a faff if you're breastfeeding and I think we only used them to make us feel better really

my boy is 10 weeks now and we really struggled with this. He is formula fed. We went onto comfort milk and tried all Infacol, colief etc.

During the day he also struggled to poo and pass gas and from reading I think it’s called infant dyschezia (spelt wrong I’m sure) which means they haven’t figured out how to use the right muscles to go.

exactly the same as you, from 3/4/5am onwards he wouldn’t settle. I think it gets better with time so it’s a waiting game. Being honest my boy still does it although not as bad. I think it’s also the time they enter a lighter sleep stage or the melatonin is wearing off. I have found if I rock/hold him for 30 mins to try get him in a deep sleep sometimes it works.

My daughter was very gassy as a baby and a toddler so I took her to the Dr to get checked out. Turned out she suffered from acid reflux and kept throwing up and getting tummy pains. She was put on acid reflux medication and it helped her thankfully.
