Reflux or gas?! Love to hear your views!

I have a 6 week old EBF baby who is super unsettled after feeds. Immediately after a feed she is squirming, trying to stand up, grimacing and often cries. I wind her and get a couple of huge burps out but the crying/unsettledness continues. She will never fall asleep at the breast because of this.

It then takes a solid hour and loads of effort to get her to sleep, I assume because something is making her so uncomfortable. She also won’t stay asleep for very long!

I have a toddler too so the feeding/burping/settling circus is beginning to take its toll.

My mum is convinced it’s gas but I’m not so sure. I’ve had the latch and a feed reviewed by a IBCLC who said it looked great and no tongue tie. The IBCLC suggested block feeding to see if that helped: it hasn’t.

Any ideas!? Is this gas? Why is so still unsettled after a burp!? Is it reflux?? No vomit - I think maybe silent reflux!

would love to hear your thoughts and experiences x
🙏

It's really good to hear that she hasn't got Tongue Tie as she is displaying some of the symptoms.

Did the Lactation Consultant suggest block feeding because she thinks that you have an oversupply?

Sunnydays44 · 08/04/2023 21:52

@PritiPatelsMaker yes the latch is actually really good and I’ve had no nipple pain or trauma so I know she’s comfortably attached. I agree with the IBCLC that I have an oversupply, I make A LOT of milk! But if that was the issue, it would have resolved once the supply began to regulate.

Her distress after feeding is almost instantaneous but she is a good efficient feeder - but as soon as she comes off she’s so unsettled. I’m a bit worried there’s something more going on.

My first had TT, the latch looked great and I had no pain or trauma either.

Personally I'd get the TT looked at again, especially of the Lactation Consultant wasn't a Tongue Tie Practitioner.

Sounds like gas to me - what winding methods are you using? I'd join this group on Facebook too. Really good advice from the people on there for small babies!

I personally I think it’s silent reflux .

My DS has reflux (not silent ) and is on Gaviscon he displayed some of the same symptoms he’s also allergic to cows milk . Does she have any other symptoms ?

Like pp said, I would consider cow's milk protein allergy also. It's less common in bf babies, but certainly not impossible.

Thanks everyone. I’m a bit baffled! I have. GP appointment on Tuesday so will ask for some advice then. I have cut all dairy and soy from my diet so will see if that has an impact.

I wonder if it’s worth a trial of a reflux medication like omeprazole?

Is your child spitting up too?

My DD2 has reflux and GP also believes she has colic too. Very unsettled after feeds, would not lie on her back, spat up after every feed, squirmed and appeared to be in pain.

Sunnydays44 · 09/04/2023 02:52

Thanks @AnaBananas - have you trialled reflux meds to see if there’s any improvement? I’m confident it’s not gas, but not sure what my options are to treat reflux. There is spit up but not enormous amounts.

It can take upto 6 weeks to notice a difference once you’ve cut it . Might be less with breastfeeding . Usually it’s Infant Gaviscon first and if that doesn’t help Omperzole.
