Bf and cellulitis in breast. GP said don't.

I have a yuckly infected cyst on my breast (not to do with actual bf). Gp said I should not feed off that side when its inflamed. But as he gave me antibiotics for thrush; am not convinced of his bf knowledge. It doesn't hurt to feed (it just hurts all the time!) and my baby is 11 months and am only feeding 2-4 times a day (one breast each time). Would the infection get into the milk ducts? or is he talking rubbish?

I'm afraid I have no idea, but what I do know is that there are very few illnesses etc where the correct advice is for the mother to stop breastfeeding ,even temporarily. Can you call one of the breastfeeding organisations?

I called la leche and she hadn't heard of it but couldn;t see how the infection could spread to the milk anyway.

thanks

msappropriate - this goes beyond a breastfeeding counsellor's boundaries, including mine....

But I would certainly ask the doctor what evidence he has that this would be harmful for the baby and tell him your information is that infections (apart from HIV) inc infections in the breast, do not indicate suspending breastfeeding. Is the cyst anywhere near the baby's mouth? If it is, I suppose he's worried about the baby coming into contact with it - it might be contagious. In that case, you could put something between the cyst and your baby....why not?

he just seem to be worried it was inflamed. So maybe it was more about not hurting me. I have fed him today (its nowhere near his mouth) as I can't seem to get anything from expressing and wanted to keep my supply going; such as it is. I should have questioned him really, he did say something comparing it to early breastfeeding but I was a bit distracted by my son. I should really go back but you never get to see the same person twice. The previous Dr I saw didn't say anything about not feeding though. This one gave me stronger antibiotics as it hadn't got better.
