Been to the hospital today with Callum to see a dietitian and Callum needed a feed while we were being seen. She asked how often he feeds and when I said she said that that it sounds like he is grazing rather than feeding, and he is only gaining weight now because he feeds so often. Anyway she is referring us to the BF consultant urgently.

Put it this way, you know when you are hungry better than anyone, so does your baby.

I used to hate people telling me she was feeding for comfort or grazing or whatever, I've been told I'm being used as a dummy even! Tink would feed for 45 minutes on, 15 off for three days in a row. She was happy, I had help eating and someone to hold her while I went to the loo, I co-slept and so I made it not a problem. She was a 31 weeker so she was tiny anyway and as long as her weight was going in the right direction, what was to worry about?

Ds1 was a 1-3 hour feeder up to about 9 months and at 14 months still feeds every 3 hours at night.

He is gaining weight? Happy? Alert? Sounds pretty good

Wow, what a really interesting thread.

Sparkly, I am no expert, but it sounds like you and Callum are doing just fine. Isn't it annoying that 'health professionals' can make you second guess yourself like that? Especially when they are spouting a load o'shite.

My sis is a bfc and the way she made me realise about babies bf'ing patterns is:

'sometimes you want a 3 course meal and you still fit that extra After Eight in when you're stuffed. Sometimes you want a snack and sometimes you just want a drink. Why is it any different for a baby? If we (adults) wrote down how often we eat and drink something, you can pretty much guarantee it is at least every 2 hours.'

That analogy really made sense to me.

Yes Move It.
And something I personally found very helpful when various idiots were talking crap about spacing feeds 4 hourly was when a bfc said to me
'And how often do you go for four hours without so much as a cup of tea?'

SparklyDYSONGothKat · 16/02/2008 13:57

yes he is now gaining weight, he is happy and alert (tho he is teething, so a bit grumpy but will let that go! lol) I dread to think what the BF consultant is going to tell me TBH. I am not even sure as to why we still have professionals involved, he is gaining weight now.

If you think it will cause you upset and distress, cancel the appointment. You don't have to go if you don't want to xx

tbh, its not because i think she will upset, i am worried about the crap she might tell me. even my bf hv didn't know about empty breast=fatty milk. she actually looked like at me when i mentioned it
