Can anything other than CMPA cause mucousy nappies?

My baby is 8 weeks old, and I’m stuck on what is causing him digestive issues. He is exclusively breast fed.

His main symptoms: lower tummy gas in particular causing poor sleeping at night where he’s clearly uncomfy and in pain. Mucuosy, runny nappies. Some crying at the breast which has started in the last few days. A bit sicky in the evenings only (not day time or in the middle of the night) Congestion at night particularly. He sneezes a few times a day but I don’t know if that’s normal?!

What I have tried: cutting dairy and soy from my diet (almost 2 weeks ago). We have held him upright after every feed since he was about 4 weeks old, except at night where if I hold him upright he throws up, but if I keep him horizontal and he stays in the same position he’s fed in, he’s fine (!!?!?). Did infacol for about 3 weeks which initially helped with burping but stopped over the last few days and haven’t really noticed a difference. We tried a sachet of baby Gaviscon last night - no difference.

other things I know: I do also have a good supply and I think quite a fast letdown, he almost always dribbles when feeding begins. His latch is fine, have been seen by 2 lactation consultants.

whats’s changed: nothing! I see no change or improvement in any of his symptoms. He’s growing well, and plenty of wet nappies. But sleep is getting worse (very sad being put in his back in the cot at night)

Surely we would have seen an improvement in the nappies by now if it was CMPA? Could it “just” be silent reflux + something else causing mucousy nappies? The only thing I can think of is that I have been on antibiotics a lot since he was born. Have had them for 5 days immediately after birth, a drip after having numerous catheter insertions and then 3x1 week of antibiotics for a UTI.

any thoughts?! Or is CMPA the only possible cause?

Maybe two possibilities.

You mentioned fast let down, this can cause digestion issues if they are getting mostly foremilk. I had this issue and my sons poos used to fizz their way out. Colief can help if this is the issue, also making sure one breast is emptied before switching sides.

Could also be the antibiotics, and if it is then baby probiotics could help.

I'd suggest keeping away from dairy a bit longer though just to make sure it's out of both your systems.

Oh also, my son was congested at night until I worked out it was whenever I ate wheat. Cutting it out cleared that issue within a day or two.

Thank you. I was eating loads of dairy before I cut it out, so I was hoping it would have shown an effect by now. Instead I’m making up with loads of bread, vegan cakes etc! Hope I’m not inadvertently making him ill with that instead.

@magicravioli I know this is an older post but did you ever get to the bottom of this? My little girl shares a lot of the same features and me with antibiotics so would be interested to hear how things went!
