Waking six week old to feed?

Would you wake a six week old to feed during the day?

EBF six week old, has crossed two centiles (although only just) and so HV says we'll keep an eye on his weight, but as a first port of call just try to feed him more frequently. He's doing about 8-9 feeds in 24 hours.

Problem is (unlike my first!) he is just so chilled and sleepy. He snoozes on me for lots of the day very happily. Would you wake him if it's been three hours since a feed? Four hours? Not bother waking?

For context, he had an illness at 2 weeks old that may have stalled his growth slightly, so we don't know for sure that there's any breastfeeding issue.

The HV hasn't said specifically to wake him, just to try to up the frequency a little. The internet only seems to mention the first week or two of life, and nothing about waking to feed after that.

Yes I'd definitely wake him in the day and I would go for 2.5 hours rather than 3.

At 6 weeks they're just beginning to get used to the difference between day and night, so you want him to get used to taking calories in the day if possible.

If he's sleepy and not interested in feeding, have a read if this on Kellymom.

I used to wake my baby throughout the day to feed but let her sleep all night.

I don't wake my DS (almost 12 weeks) and never woke DD to feed. Tbf though, DS longest stretch is usually 3 hours but often wants to feed every 2. It's usually because I've woken him by accident though. DD was very similar but used to be what I'd say as a snacker so would feed quite a lot.
If he's gained weight then I probably wouldn't wake him unless it got to 4 hours and there was no signs of him waking then I'd probably give him a nudge as I feel that might be a bit long.
You could try a couple of weeks of waking every 2 hours and just feeding him more to give him a boost of weight gain.
Sounds like you are doing amazing though so I wouldn't worry. I doubt there is an issue with you breastfeeding and he's likely getting everything he needs from each feed

Forgot to mention that when DD went through a phase of slowing down her weight gain, I offered every 2 hours in the day for a couple of weeks and her weight went right back up.

How might I increase my baby's gain? from Kellymom is a useful article too Wink

Thanks for the reassurance everyone. He's really alert in the day (when he's awake!) and sleeps well at night. I've been feeding a bit more in the day so hopefully that does the trick.

I used to wake mine. Every 3 hours between 7am and 7pm.
