breast feed for 1st week but no milk to speak off and baby loosing weight and jaundiced so began top up with formula. re-admitted to district general hospital. eventually went to bottle feeding only. using tommy closer to nature but ? why still getting wind which seems unable to bring up? baby quite laid back, not screaming the house down but being disturbed when trying to sleep as having to grunt all the time! Feel really sorry for him.what can i do to help?

crackpotdog, sorry things are going a bit less than swimmingly....babies do grunt, sometimes very loudly! If he was in pain he would either be screaming or whimpering all the time, and look floppy.

I have no idea if it is wind that makes babies grunt.

If you want to go back to breastfeeding, then you can. Just ask. Often babies lose too much weight because it has not been spotted that breastfeeding is not going well....not your fault, as there are people whose job it is to see this!

What does midwife/HV say about the grunting?

saw midwife a week ago when grunting was not so bad and she said filling nappy!! but worse today ++++. due to see midwife 2mor, yet to meet HV!!

think we may have began to sort grunting/wind out having read other answers to questions on this website!!
may be due to our improper use of anti-colic vent thingyme-jig!!

Could be just general noise making (which my DD1 did a lot until she started talking at 5 months)! Apparently some babies do that.... I would agree with tiktok though that if the wind was bad - you'd know!!!

Doing pedalling movements with their little legs apparently helps trapped wind in many babies

My baby sounds exactly like yours! He's really chilled most of the time and sleeps like a dream in the day but at night he grunts around a lot and sometimes screams. He also farts and hiccups an incredible amount!

I had a very similar scenario with poor bf, jaundice, and he lost a lot of weight in hospital and so I had to give formula. I was able to bf when I got home and am now doing formula top ups after 20mins of breast. I have found that bf really calms him down at night and it might be worth trying it again?

Other than that, I warm the formula at night (but not in the day as I'm trying to keep him awake) and that seems to shift the wind and I also use a Dr Brown bottle at night. I don't know which of these works but it does seem to ease him. And if all else fails I pull him into bed with me about 5am and that stops the grunting! I also have earplugs!
