Using one of those little cup things for top ups

Hi all

Does anyone use those little cuppy things (well they are, in fact, little cups) like this one:

www.expressyourselfmums.co.uk/Medela-Disposable-Baby-Cup-Feeder-/prodnum/9/areanum/281

for topping up bf with formula or EBM?

I wondered if they could be used on newborns and, if so, how? Do you just tip it down their throat? Anyone got any recommendation for the best one?

(I am going to bf as much as I can, it's just that I know I am likely to have production issues and am just thinking ahead.)

I didn't but I used this onewww.expressyourselfmums.co.uk/Medela-SoftCup-Advanced-Feeder/prodnum/223/areanum/281

I just tipped it in front of his mouth and sort of let him lap at it iyswim

ta-ness ib, that looks good if a little medical. Did you use it from newborn? any wind issues or anything?

My dd had to have top up as a newborn. We used a slanty cup and she sort of lapped up the milk, no wind issues. But she was only using for two days for medical reasons. then BF well for 6 months

No, didn't use it from newborn, from about 3 months. Come to think about it, we would sometimes give him a normal cup. Just tipped it and he lapped at it.

Don't know about wind etc. as ds had so many problems at the time that we probably wouldn't have noticed!

Ah a bit like this one dosydot?

I am hoping that I will only need to use it a bit till some milk comes in. I wonder if they will have any at the hosp?

Thats much bigger than the one I used, our one was about the size of a pill pot they use in hospital and they gave it to us and supplied a couple for when we went home. I will see if I can find the piccie of DD using it

Lucy, How do you know you will have production issues ? Most mothers with good support to establish breastfeeding can feed twins or triplets.

Many issues with supply are helped by unlimited access to the breast and no topups unless medically advised. As unnecessary top ups interfer with the natural supply and demand nature of our milk.

Most babies don't need topups before the milk comes in, as they get enough nutrients from the colostrum to keep going. It is totally normal for breastfed babies to lose around 10% of their body weight until milk comes in.

Of course none of this might apply to your new baby, depending on why you are sure you will have production issues.

Thanks DD! I will ask at the hosp.

Hi BE, I had a reduction a few years ago. I do plan to bf as much as possible to get the supply going, I am just trying to think of backup plans I suppose!

i couldn't get ds latched on for five days and gave top ups in the lid of a normal baby bottle, they're quite flexible so you can sort of squeeze them to make a little spout. but if only i'd spoke to a proper bf counsellor i'd have
a) got the baby latched on or
b) been told about expressing colostrum and not given formula grr.

so i advise you to call one of the helplines now lucy and they can give you some proper advice and help you to plan.

BabiesEverywhere · 13/02/2008 11:47

Very sensible to have backup plans. All the best I hope everything goes well for you and your new baby-to-be

Its a bit like a doidy cup, such as blooming marvellous sell and we use for our disabled 4.5 year old (amazing cup, only unlidded one we can use) though i'd go for the doidya s I dont like disposable items if I can help it.

When cp feeding ds1 I used the lid of the avent bottle . Worked though.

Doidy cup sounds so cute.

I am looking into expressing colostrum fishie indeed, what with that and doidy cups and pumps and blah blah blah I am a bit obsessed! Hopefully it'll save me getting obsessed later . Thanks for the best wishes BE.
