Is it safe to dilute formula milk?

Just that really.. LO refuses to take water and I suspect she may be thirsty rather than hungry. Is it safe to do 1 scoop of formula with 4 ounces of water, say?

people are very rude
www.healthline.com/health/baby/why-cant-babies-have-water

Health line:

In short, when the kidneys are given more water than they can handle, the excess water ends up in your bloodstream. This dilutes the fluid in your bloodstream and lowers the concentration of important electrolytes, like sodium. Too much dilution and you’re at risk for hyponatremia, which literally means too little (hypo) salt in the blood (natremia).

Not rude and you're scaremongering. An average baby would have to have around 60-80 oz of water, not a few oz in a bottle ffs. Saying that, it's still not a good idea as babies under 6 months still need nutrients from formula/bm

Just to be clear, HV did NOT suggest diluting formula, she suggested giving LO water.

I know MN hates HVs, but this thread is ridiculous. It is an NHS recommendation to give babies water in some circumstances, e.g. constipation.. Hyponatraemia (water intoxication) is incredibly rare in babies who are otherwise well - as @jizzlord has said, you'd have given a huge amount of water for it to be a risk. No one is saying it's ideal to give a baby water routinely, but it's not frigging cyanide.

The HV did not suggest diluting formula - that was the OP.

Meanwhile, PPs are uncritically quoting the formula feed manufacturer, like they are some sort of neutral reliable source, instead of a notoriously untrustworthy industry that doesn't give a fuck about safety and that has harmed millions of children, worldwide. But, yeah, it's HVs quoting NHS advice that are the problem 🙄

We were advised by the GP to give DS small amounts of cooled pre boiled water. It was due to constipation caused by medication. I would say in general just stick to milk.
