Did anyone's newborn have trouble with wind that wasn't reflux or CMPA?

With my first he had reflux and projectile vomiting and was on multiple medications for it

My second is 5 weeks and I'm just not sure, he was a very content baby for the first 3.5 weeks then became more unsettled and windy. He'll cry and arch his back, bring his knees up etc but does settle usually within around 10 mins. He poops a lot but they all look normal. He is very hiccupy and burps and farts a lot. His crying has started to ramp up and last night he cried a lot. He's sometimes sick small amounts of curdled milk, but not that often and occasionally when burping a little dribble of milk will run out

I don't know whether I jump to cutting out dairy, taking him to GP etc or if some babies do just struggle with wind for a few weeks but it passes on its own without me changing my diet or starting him on loads of medication? Can it be normal?

Not want you want to hear, CMPA was diagnosed in our newborn at 5 weeks. Tongue tie at 6 weeks.

Yes, some babies struggle with wind for a few weeks without it being an issue. It sometimes shows as colic. My DD was fine for the first 2-3 weeks, seemed uncomfortable and cried a lot in the evenings for weeks, it started to ease noticeably at 10 weeks.

Whereas DS has CMPA and horrendous reflux and it is very noticeably different to DD.

doingitalllagain · 27/02/2023 19:23

So how do you know when it's CMPA? My worry is I totally alter my diet and wait the 4 weeks they say, 2 weeks to leave my system 2 weeks to leave his and then think it's better but in fact it was just a normal thing that he outgrew and wasn't CMPA?

Same with reflux, I could start him on the medications my eldest had and again think I see an improvement when really he just grew out of it and now I'm using medications on him unnecessarily for however long

But then I don't want to just assume it's normal and leave him suffering?! Blush

Could be colic, does it happen more at a certain time of the day (e.g. afternoons/evenings?) Try infacol to see if that helps . Try to rule out the easier ones first before trying any diet changes for CMPA.

pebbles3004 · 27/02/2023 19:39

To clarify - my little boy had colic from 6-10 weeks. He was miserable come late afternoon/evening for a few hours, I felt so so sorry for him. Infacol helped. They all tend to outgrow colic/reflux by 12 weeks as their digestive system matures to a good enough level to avoid colic type symptoms.

doingitalllagain · 27/02/2023 19:53

Yes definitely worse in the evenings/nights. We've started infacol so will see if it makes a difference. Also stopped feeding lying down and I'm winding him after each feed rather than letting him sleep so hopefully he'll improve

Both mine had terrible witching hours from about 3 weeks old. They just cried and fed and cried between 7pm and 10pm every day.

It stopped by itself by 3/4 months old.

Angelik · 27/02/2023 19:55

Infacol, gripe water, colief - give each one a try for at least a week. I always associate raising legs with wind in intestines (gripe!). Tummy massages for babies worked an absolute miracle for my dd.

CocoPlum · 27/02/2023 19:56

My first thought is always, always, get your latch hecked by a local breastfeeding specialist- the ABM website has a search function for local groups, or post on a local mum's FB group. It might be that your baby just isn't latching as well as he could and a little tweak could help stop him taking in air.

Porridgeislife · 27/02/2023 20:06

What @CocoPlum said. We had quite similar (particularly the hiccuping) as well as a generally cranky baby. It turned out to be a poor latch meaning she was gulping air which causes reflux type symptoms. The issue was caused by a mild tongue tie/neck and body tension.

Thelonelychicken · 27/02/2023 20:31

Silent reflux?

drainedofalllife · 27/02/2023 21:20

Having recently spoken to the consultant paediatrician about CMPA the symptoms they look for are blood in stools and an all over body rash. Wind and crying wouldn’t be sufficient for a CMPA diagnosis.

Some babies are just not great at getting wind up, some are just gassier. It’s only natural to want your baby to be more comfortable and settled but it may just be a case of it taking time.

MindatWork · 27/02/2023 21:26

Yy to getting your latch checked, DD had an undetected posterior tongue tie which meant for the first 8 weeks of her life she was gulping air and dribbling milk every time she fed.

She was a grumpy, windy baby who also had a witching hour (3hours!) every evening.

I drove myself mad googling and convinced myself she had a milk allergy or something similar, but she never had a rash or projectile vomiting. It was a post on here I read at around 4am one morning that said it’s not always an allergy - sometimes it’s just that they’re little and their digestive systems are still developing. DD was also 6 weeks prem which didn’t help, and was breech so also had neck tension as per pp’s baby.

She did grow out of it at around 10-12 weeks but it still a little fart bag at 4 years old 🤣.

I have to disagree with this. Our baby had neither blood in stools nor all over body rash - CMPA diagnosed was by a consultant paediatrician.

What symptoms did they have if you don’t mind me asking please?
