Breast feeding and alcohol- does it mix?

DD is 3 months and I only had odd drink when I was pregnant but now fancy a few glasses of wine. Is it ok to drink when breast feeding. I have been and DD seems fine.

Fiona - there is a huge amount in the archives on this. If you do a search for the discussions, you can then come back if you have more questions

fiona76 · 09/02/2008 14:30

Where do I look for the archives??

Tiktok, who is a nct bfc, says that you have to drink more than 20 untis before there is enough alcohol in your bm to affect the baby. There's also evidence that the relaxing effect of alcohol helps your let down reflex.

The odd few glasses of wine really aren't going to harm your baby. So carry on as you are .

Click on "search for messages" at the top of the screen - then fill in the search fields.

In answer to your OP, yes, it's fine in moderation. But a search will give you much greater detail, this question comes up all the time.

Search for messages , Fiona - link after 'find discussions' near top of page

IAteRoseMaryConleyForBreakfast · 09/02/2008 14:35

Olihan, I would add that alcohol can potentially reduce your milk supply, IIRC.

Snaf · 09/02/2008 14:35

Go to 'search for messages' at the top, put 'alcohol' into the word search and 'tiktok' into the poster search and you'll get tonnes of good advice.

(But basically, a drink or two is fine when bf-ing...)

Olihan · 09/02/2008 14:36

Dur! Didn't notice the previous reply was tiktok . Anyway, archives can be found if you go to 'search for messages' near the top of the screen, then put alcohol breastfeeding into the 'search for messages containing these words' box, then select 'breast and bottlefeeding' from the topic list.

Olihan, I don't really say that, now, do I? We have had this convo before.....!

It's not quite as simple as that, as the question of speed of drinking comes into it When I said something like that, it was in the context of another thread...not happy about being quoted like this

Olihan · 09/02/2008 15:23

Tiktok, it was Victorian Squalor you had this convo with, here, last time, not me .

But I will consider myself told, didn't mean to take it out of context, it was just the figure that had stuck with me.

Fiona, the most detailed info about this (including tiktok's stuff in context) is
here.

while your on the subject my friend is going out tonight for her 1st weeding aniversery ,she has exspressed milk for baby's stay at nana's but how long does it take for the alcohol to not affect bm after A good drink

tiktok · 09/02/2008 17:59

Sorry, Olihan

theboob - read the links and you'll see the answer....body processes alcohol at about 1.5 hours per unit so do the maths! But unless she is completely rat arsed when she comes back from her night out, she might want to just feed as soon as she wants to....her choice, and if she prefers to have no alcohol at all in her breastmilk, she can easily calculate that too

duchesse · 09/02/2008 18:01

God yeah, only way to get through the day!

Seriously though, my first lovely health visitor recommended a glass of wine a day! She was a canny lady and knew that happy mum=happy baby.

Not sure I'd recommend getting utterly bladdered before feeding though...

duchesse · 09/02/2008 18:03

Oh, and my mother was prescribed Guinness in the maternity hospital in the 1970s. Something to do with her iron levels; my sister seems fine...

honey2theb · 09/02/2008 18:58

well im sat here with a glass of wine

williamsmummy · 09/02/2008 19:49

dont know really? never tried mixing my breastmilk with booze.
hubby has tried it without once, says its a bit too sweet for his taste.

cant do it now though, stopped producing milk years ago.

cocktails anyone?

TinkerbellesMum · 09/02/2008 22:58

The breasts aren't like bottles, they're not full ready in advance, you make milk as you need it, so if you are waiting after wards then you will be ok to feed your baby. Happily pump and dump has been disproven!

If your baby sleeps through and you drink before you go to bed, by the morning your system will be clear. If baby doesn't then you probably wouldn't want to be drinking anyway if you have to get up through the night lol.
