Tommy Tippee Closer to Nature bottles - teat "caving in" when dd feeds - what am I doing wrong?

DD is mainly bf with the very occasional bottle of formula or EBM so I'm not using bottles all that often - got the TT closer to nature ones with the wee vent thing and she feeds well from them, however the teat keeps kind of caving in and then she struggles. Am I putting it in the ring thing wrongly or is this just something they do?
Anyone who uses them and can advise I'd be very grateful!

keep the tiny valve thingy on top so air can enter

PillockOfTheCommunity · 08/02/2008 20:55

I'm not sure that can be the reason, I didn't realise the valve was there so have been using them for 9 months without making sure it's at the top!

I'd think it more likely that you have it in the ring incorrectly, which has happened to me before when I left him with a sitter!

verylittlecarrot · 08/02/2008 20:59

Perhaps not that the valve is on top, more that it does open and close, otherwise when liquid is removed from the bottle a vaccum gets created if air cannot enter to replace it, causing the teat to collapse.

Perhaps!

I felt very silly when I realised what the valve was

verylittlecarrot · 08/02/2008 21:05

My goodness! You mean you didn't know about the "anti-colic valve"?!!!

Sadly my boobs are lacking an anti-colic valve which meant my dd suffered colic for a few weeks.

anti-colic valve my bottom.

PillockOfTheCommunity · 08/02/2008 21:07

lol
no, the magic valve is missing off my boobs too!

if you look on the inside of the teat you can see that the 'valve' consists of two thin flaps which meet together. If youo gently squeeze it- you can get it to open up like circle...sometimes thay get 'stuck' so cant easily open and let the air in.

mine was stuck when i got it new and also after i had used it a few times since hard to clean the valve.

so what i do is every now and again prior to sterilising gently with finger tips squeeze the vlave flaps open.....! does that make sense? i hope i aint being patronising- btu it too me a while to figure it out!

Wow MN teaches me something new again!

We've been using these bottles for about 3 weeks. Sometimes the teat gets sucked in, sometimes it doesn't. It thought it depended on whether DD was particularly tired, or hungry, so affecting how hard she was sucking.

I never realised it was a valve, I just thought it was a handy piece of rubber for getting the teat off the ring.

Well at least I don't have to go hunting for faster flow teats now

PillockOfTheCommunity · 08/02/2008 21:15

glad to hear it's not just me that missed the valve completely!

PuppyMonkey · 08/02/2008 21:16

This happened to us a lot and dp just used to prick it and make the hole bigger and then it never happened. Valve my arse....

Caz10 · 10/02/2008 12:42

i knew about the valve!! [smug smiley]
but tbh i just keep it to the top and have never actually looked at it.
i find them a damn fiddle to fit to the ring things so it's prob just not in right, but i will have a good poke about before i use it next time - not patronising at all vis, i would never have figured that out!!
