Nutramigen and Aptamil pepti 1

Hi all does anyone know if nutramigen and Aptamil pepti 1 are essentially the same? And if so is the Aptamil more palatable? DS absolutely refuses the nutramigen I don’t think he likes the taste of it whereas before he would drink his normal formula fine

Hi, not the same, no. I think nutramigen is more extensively hydrolysed than the Pepti, and the pepti definitely smells and tastes better. Did you try a phased introduction? So mixing small amounts of the nutramigen with the previous formula, and gradually increasing the amount (so starting with 1 scoop nutramigen/3 scoops pepti and then working up to 4 scoops nutramigen). Worked for us!

(Although from what I remember, nutramigen has to be made with cooled rather than boiling water, and the pepti is made with boiling water, so you might need to make up e.g. 1oz nutramigen feed and 3oz pepti and then combine them).

Nutramigen is more broken down than aptimal pepti. Aptamil pepti still has some cows milk protein in it, but the protein has been broken down into the amino acids which means that a lot of babies that can't tolerate normal formula manage it. It is much better tolerated than nutramigen, so it's definitely worth discussing trying with your gp/dietitian.

If its not an option for your ds, you could ask your gp about trying to do a gradual switch over. So start with e.g 3oz normal formula 1oz nutramigen, then once he's drinking that do 2oz of each and so on. Whether that's a safe option for ypu though depends on what kind of reaction he was having to the cow milk protein, in a severe reaction it wouldn't be recommended. I've heard of parents being advised to out a few drops of vanilla essence into nutramigen as well tk help, but again I'd discuss that with your Dr. Good luck!
