Can you work full time and breastfeed?

8 years too late for me, but I've always wondered if what I was told was right

I successfully BF my DD but finances dictated that i had to go back to work full time when she was 14 weeks old. I told the HV that I planned to feed her in the morning, then express at work and then feed from getting home - so, 8am ish feed, express through day and then BF from 6pm onwards

She told me there was no way I'd be able to do it and to get her onto formula. So I did. I often wonder (now I'm older, wiser and not as "yes HV" as I was) if I could have continued?

Thanks, anyway MT, the recipe looks good!

God, my mind boggles. You have to be some placid, self sacrificing person to do it without risking other relationships and mental health. If you are such a person - you deserve a medal!"

What, to work full time and express at work?

chipmonkey · 10/02/2008 13:41

I have a feeling MT might have posted that in the wrong thread too, hunker!

hunkermunker · 10/02/2008 13:43

I do hope so...!

MamaG, you were let down by your HV and the system that allows them to have bf training as an "option" and doesn't test them on their knowledge or prejudices before letting them loose on women in the community.

I'm off out before Hunker throws a molotov cocktail at me!

hunkermunker · 10/02/2008 15:10

MT, no lobbing of anything - just wondering if you think of me as placid and self-sacrificing?

monkeytrousers · 10/02/2008 19:45

In the sense of extremely good natured and devoted; yes! I meant it in a very positive sense!

yes you can. You can actually feed when you want. I am still feeding at 22 months, but not exclusively. Stopped expressing though. I sometimes stay overnight for work,a= and can go a day without feeding and it still works when I see the 'baby' again. I didn;t know till i tried it that you don't have to have a regular schedule , that your body adjusts. i thought first time round that I had to keep a schedule of expressing instead of a feed going but you don't. You can not express on a day you are at work and still feed later (tho you can feel sore in the earlier months) then on a day you are at home feed more, thus varying it every day and its ok.
Expressing at work is hard as its v difficult to be relaxed but just gettinga bit out can relieve any painful swelling. Sometmes I have expressed and not stored the milk as its quite little.
