4m weaning

AmberM2022 · 31/01/2023 10:13

So before i start i know people will say ‘you should wait till 6m’ so we can skip them comments.
My LO is 17weeks now and my doctor has advised us to start weaning him very gently- little bit (spoonful) of stewed apple / baby rice.
He has a cows milk allergy and suffers with bad reflux - so i’m assuming this is something they advise to people with baby’s like this? He is on Neocate LCP milk and i do actually think (and from reading other peoples opinions) this milk doesn’t fill babies up as much as regular milk.
I just want to know if anyone else has done this and if so what did you give/ make them?

We were also advised to wean at 4 months. This was due to weight and allergy issues.

Do you have a dietician working with you? It helps a lot and I'd push to get one if you don't.

Here's what she advised for us.

Start with breakfast as you're always home. Baby rice made with the formula is a good first food. It's another milk feed but also gets them used to eating.

Then go for dinner as again you're at home. Leave lunch until last.

Pouches are great for early weaning as it saves you a lot of effort. For us it also allowed a calorie diary to be done. It also allows for lots more variety. It was about a month before my DS moved on from just having breakfast to having veg purée for tea.

We weaned DS at 4 months on very similar circumstances.

You've started off well. I did some purées and froze them in ice cube trays or little pots. It's hard at first because all they can have at this age is fruit and veg and you tend to want them to have the sweet stuff because you know they'll eat.

I weaned dc2 at 4 months because dc1 has allergy and it reduces the risk quite significantly. Basically just started with puréed veg, fruit. Moved on to scrambled eggs, porridge, peanut butter (all allergens but I assume you will be avoiding cows milk). And just a tiny bit of what we were having, mashed up. Not really any need to feed them anything special, as long as it’s healthy and low salt and sugar. He took to eating very well and was quickly feeding himself with spoon & finger foods.

@PritiPatelsMaker @Twizbe @User98866 Thanks all for your replies! Can i ask did you start to give them the food at the same time each day or did it vary?
And if you little one had reflux issues (my little boy does) did you find this eventually helped when they were fully weaned?
I have started him on some stewed apple, he is hit and miss whether he likes it haha!

Yep. We always did breakfast at the same time each day and then the same with other meals as we introduced them.

Try the baby rice, it won't taste different to milk and at this age he might need that.

I'm not sure about reflux for my son. He never spat up his milk from me but always vomited his formula. Regular formula was projectile and special was like reflux. He still did this until almost a year old.

Yes we always fed at the same time.

Started with breakfast and quickly added lunch

We were given pretty port advice though as it didn't help the reflux and his sleep actually got worse. It turned out the reason for his reflux was Tongue Tie so the weaning made no difference.
