Tips needed for increasing milk supply after baby has been feeding all day

Baby has been feeding on and off for the last 24 hours and there is not milk left. Have been expressing for the next feed which her daddy is giving her and she normally has 6 ounces, only managed to get 2 ounces out. Has anyone got any tips or advice on increasing supply?
Desperatly needed

how old is your DD?

CantSleepWontSleep · 06/02/2008 22:38

Hey diddle! There is always milk left, as you make more as baby is drinking.

The best way to increase supply is to keep on feeding.

Expressing is not as efficient as the baby feeding directly.

In my experience expressing is not a fair reflection of what the baby actually gets.

If you've been feeding a lot, that is the best way of maximising supply.

How old is she?

diddle · 06/02/2008 22:41

she's only 5 weeks.

so the best way to get more milk is to feed her from the breast rather than express for the bottle?

My midwife told me when my baby was feeding a lot and I felt empty. I should drink a pint of water then lay down and try to sleep for an hour.
It certainly seemed to work for me.

flossish · 06/02/2008 22:42

yes that is the best way.

LardyMardyDaisy · 06/02/2008 22:42

sorry that was a bit short

there will be milk there I'm sure, but when my DD got to around eight weeks my boobs stopped getting engorged as my body started to work out what was needed. I've always struggled to express as well as I just dpon't get the let down reflex so was only ever managing to get what was stored in the ducts, usually only around a couple of ounces. that hasn't really changed as she has gotten older.

however there are some over the counter remedies for increasing supply (can't remember the name of any at the moment) and eating oats (porridge, oatcakes, flapjacks) is supposed to help.

At 5 weeks, yes definitely just keep feeding from the breast.

Will be the best way of building up supply.

have a look on www.kellymom.com for advice. there is lots of good information there.

and bump this again tomorrow for tiktok or one of the other lovely BFing ladies

You are doing a great job by the sounds of it, and it is hard not to get despondent when you are tired and emotional.

CantSleepWontSleep · 06/02/2008 22:45

Whilst drinking water and getting rest are obviously good for you, they make absolutely no difference to your supply.

Yes diddle - just feed baby more - it all works on supply and demand - tis a wonderful thing .

diddle · 06/02/2008 22:50

thank you, you guys are so encouraging and kind.

I'm asking for a friend of mine actually, and so far she's doing all the right things so fingers crossed she has a good night.

moodywren, your midwife is wrong. the best way to increase milk supply is to feed the baby as often as necessary.

and you only need enough water to quench your own thirst, not 'extra'.
