We have been giving DS a bottle of EBM since about 6 weeks old with no problems. Stupidly, because it always seemed to be ok we haven't given a bottle now for about 6 weeks. However, I start work next week (only 1 day per week, with DH at home with DS on that day) and today we tried giving him a bottle of EBM.... but he won't take it! We have tried for HOURS and he has just screamed and screamed. We also tried giving it from a cup but he wasn't keen about that either. What can I do, I am in such a panic??? I have until Tuesday to sort this out! Please HELP.

First of all don't panci, easier said than done I know.

Bottom line is, he will HAVE to take it when you are not there. He knows how to do it, he will be with his dad, whom I presume has given him a bottle before, so there will be NO PROBLEM.

KIds always try it on when they know mum is around, because we give in to them and they know it. When he has his day with his dad they will probably be having so much fun that he will forget to kick up a fuss and take his bottle of EBM.

how old is he ? One of about 6 months could probably manage if you feed before you leave him and as soon as you get back, with water in between. My DS1 did that - wouldn't touch ebm from anything.

My dd accepted a bottle at 8 weeks, completely refused when i tried again a 20 weeks. Now at 6 months she doesnt mind in the slightest and slurps it down - even though it is me giving it to her (and that is a 1am cos im trying to make her stop feeding in the night cos i need sleep!)

I would try introducing it in a very relaxed atmosphere before she has realised she is hungry - ie dont make her wait, let dh give it to her while you go out for a walk!

Nothing to add to all of this (god how I panicked about this one!) but yes, he'll take it. He's taken it before. Hugs. xxxxxxxx

5 month old DS managed 7 hours one day last week on nothing but 2 oz (if that much) EBM. No, he wasn't a very happy baby all that time, but he was happily playing when I came in from work. Whereas I was gutted to pour 5 oz of EBM down the sink because nobody would drink it.
DS seems to take fluid better from a cup than a bottle nowadays, worth a try.

don't know what to suggest hellomama but as the others have said i'm sure he will be fine

let us know how you get on and enjoy your day back at work!

zebra - make it into rice pudding, or something - bet someone would eat it then Grin.

The big ones won't even take it mixed in with their breakfast cereal, T'robin! I can't blame them, it does taste revoltingly sweet. Annoying cuz the 5yo had a tummy bug and, unadulturated, EBM was one of the few things I thought might stay down.

Nothing new to add. We started giving DTs a bottle at night when they were 7 weeks so that I could get a few hours uninterrupted sleep. DT1 is not keen, at most we get 2oz down her and DT2, now that he is on solids will eat or drink anything. We found it easier for me to be out when they started to fuss about bottles recently. Such a shame that I get to go out with the girlies in order to establish bottle feeding. It will work. Don't worry, and as someone already said if you feed before you leave and when you return your DS should be fine. My DT1 always is. Smile

Oh thank you all so much for your helpful replies and moral support. Eventually DS did take a bottle after actually smirking at us for causing so much of a palaver (it took hours)! and yes, it was definitely a smirk, despite him being only 18 weeks old! Thank goodness for unconditional love. What a day! Am now feeling slightly more relaxed, compared to this morning where i thought I'd have to resign before I even started! WIll let you know how I get on on Tuesday and if DH remains sane (and whether i have a cooked dinner waiting when I get home ) :o
