Had ds 8 month check yesterday (he is now 9 months) and mentioned I am still bf. Wanted her advice on what to do when I go back to work 2 days a week.

She looked quite shocked, and said 'well you know theres no nutritional value in breast milk after 6 months dont you? I mean, um, if you still want to do it for bonding or whatever thats fine, but the baby dosent need it'

When I said uhhhh ok but he is not interested in formula she replied 'it dosent matter, give him cows milk'???

ffs do they train hv's at all?

I would complain about her. Stupid woman.

How very annoying for you.

JodieG1 · 06/02/2008 17:47

Complain. She shouldn't be telling anyone that rubbish. Breastmilk does have nutritional value after 6 months and she should know that. It concerns me that people like her are giving out information daily to women that might not know any better.

Glitter, this is appalling. Next time, ask her what happens to breastmilk after 6 mths....does it turn to dishwater, coca cola or what? Because if it has no nutritional value, you'd like to know how this happens. Does a fairy come in the middle of the night and flick a switch? Or what?

Stupid woman

LOL tiktok! Just logged back in. V funny. Yes I have actually passed her name onto the HV running the bf training course, who is going to speak to her.

And gov wonder why women give up bf...

I must admit I (naively) thought I might get a pat on the pack!

kellymom.com has lots of info on the nutritional value of breastmilk and lots of other useful ammunition

I had a nice experience here in NZ, when in A&E with my dad and DS (then nearly 10 months) the triage nurse asked if I was breasfeeding and then said 'well obviously feel free to feed anywhere but if you DO want to go somewhere private there is a room here, oh and here is the water and teh cups. Take the baby/pram wherever you want, no problems'. All unpromted, which was lovely

I'll give you a pat on the back for still feeding, well done!

When you go back to work, if you want to keep feeding make the breast pump your friend.

I went to see HV when my daughter turned 1 (a month ago) to ask advice about cow's milk, giving up b/feeding etc and she looked at me with such a shocked face and just said there really was no need to still be feeding and just to stop.

No hint of well done for giving your baby a lovely start and if you feel ready to stop here is some helpful advice. More like just stuff this nice piece of rubber in her mouth what do you mean she is suprised when her cup has milk in it rather than water and sprays it all over you...
