It is tongue-tie?

My DS is 9 weeks old and now FF.
BF first to weeks but it was tie curlingly painful, he struggled to latch which resulted in cluster feeding and my nipples where in bits. Managed to get him back to birth weight. 6lb born so only had a little mouth.

switched to FF and his weight is fine however,
he always sounds congested
cluster sneezes as after feed (has always done this)
struggles with wind and burping (we are on infocol at the moment)
night time he sleeps but is rested and moans in his sleep.
only takes 5oz but if we take the bottle away to burp half way he won’t go back on it.

is it best contacting my HV to get him checked?
I don’t want it to be missed and have him struggle with weaning and speech when older.

(first time paranoid mum)

I had a LO with tongue tie and reflux and also a 6lber! firstly if they have reflux infacol won’t help (found out the hard way) it’s orange flavoured and can make the reflux worse.

I also struggled to BF and it was painful, I asked the midwife to check the first week and she said yes but it’s mild and baby gaining weight so no need to intervene. I gave up and went to FF and took a while to find the right formula but reflux got worse, in the end had to go private for a TT cut, the professor said it was quite tight and no wonder I found BF difficult as baby’s tongue was so restrictive. NHS / HV weren’t interested in it as baby was gaining weight and they don’t do it past a certain age. GP was helpful to write a referral letter though once I said I was claiming on PHI!

Our trust don't do it unless baby is breastfeeding. You may need to go private.

My DS had his done as I was still trying to breastfeed but it was a combination of expressing and bottle feeding and breastfeeding. I'm pleased it was done but it took so long he preferred the breast milk in the bottle unless it was the first feed in the morning as breastfeeding was much harder work for him.

My Niece was born 5months before but SIL didn't try BF so Nieces very bad TT was left to stretch itself. It didn't, feeding was a nightmare, she had horrific reflux and SIL had 6months of a screaming miserable baby who was in pain. It was awful. Her speech is fine but you can still see the tongue tie.

I'd push to get it diagnosed and if it is and you can afford it pay for it privately.

Good luck

Ask HV, try and get it snipped asap, it helped a lot for ds1 and ds2.

forgot to mention he also get hiccups regularly. Not the ‘classic’ signs of TT but it would explain a lot. I was massively messed around with MWs. To the point where I saw someone different each time, pushed for them to come see me as struggled to latch but said I was doing okay but I knew it wasn’t meant to be that painful. They never even mentioned possibly of TT.

mum going to try and take a photo of his tongue

I’ll get in touch with the HV as she’s been my only constant person

Hi

Please can I ask where you went for private treatment?

I am having the same problem and the doctor told me it's only mild so they won't treat especially as he is gaining weight.
