New mum - formula

Hi
I’ve just come home with newborn from hospital- we were on pre made formula in the hospital I have kendamil powder here same one baby was having in hospital. I’ve just made a bottle up of the powder myself following the guide of 7lbs = 90 mls = x3 scoops. Is this correct?

baby was 7 13 for weight - I’m very worried about going over the mls and potentially making it too watery and harming him! This probably sounds odd - but first baby, never used formula and very tired and extremely sore so everything is on top of my thoughts!

Yes that's right lovely. 90ml is 3 scoops. 1 scoop per 30ml/1oz

Don't worry too much about the feeding guide amounts they were way off for my little one. I just fed on demand and sometimes she had more than the chart sometimes less.

Will the 90ml with three scoops be ok for baby? If baby wants more I’m happy to make another bottle I was doing 30mls every three hours in the hospital but baby seems to want more than that, but the bottles I have only really start from 60mls so I thought if I followed 90 baby can have a little extra! Is it possible to over do formula like make it too watery if it’s a little above the line? My friend said I have to be careful as water is dangerous for babies which I understand but surely not with formula?

You are making it up correctly from what you've said.
Make the 90mls and then use paced responsive feeding - this will mean you are very unlikely to over feed your baby as he will be taking in what he wants rather than swallowing what drips into his mouth. You do need to wind more frequently as there will be air in the teat.
Don't worry too much about the feeding guide - it is only a guide - go with what your baby wants.
If you've just got home you should hopefully have a midwife coming to you tomorrow who can reassure you.

I think what your friend meant is it is dangerous to over dilute the formula as then the baby won’t be taking in enough calories. As long as it is pretty near the line don’t worry too much but in some places unfortunately mums do need to dilute quite a bit more due to the cost of formula.

I made the 90mls but when shaking I looked and it was just over I’m sure I did it to the 90mls line is this normal does it go slightly over when you add powder?

Yes it does go over, that's normal. You'll be doing a great job so try not to worry!
Also I recommend buying a perfect prep machine as they're a godsend for feeding!

Sounds perfect to me! I use Kendamil too.

I second getting a perfect prep! I have two, one upstairs and one downstairs. God send.

Thank you loads honestly I just sound so paranoid to all of you mums😭 I’m so worried about making him sick etc! I’ve just set a prep machine up actually!! Just ran through a sterilise check with it and now testing it! So much quicker than a kettle!!

Just one thing to add - try to avoid shaking the bottle to mix the powder and water together, it creates a lot of bubbles which can create more wind! After the hot shot place the bottle on a firm surface and swirl or invert the bottle rather than shake. The powder will still dissolve but you'll have less bubbles 😊
