Nipple shields

Has anyone used for a non latching baby?

DC3 is 6 weeks and BF since birth. She had slow weigh gain but is fine now as getting a v small top up each day.

She has a tongue tie which I have repeatedly been told does not need to be snipped. Now at 6 weeks she is really struggling to latch as my breast have softened now that may supply has settled down and my breast aren’t full.

Feel like nipple shields might be my last chance to get her back on the breast. Anyone had success using them and any tips for getting started?

I used them on suggestion of HV and they helped him latch until I took him to an osteopath who helped ease the stiffness in his neck from the birth. After that he was able to latch well enough that I came off the shields.

i used them from about 4 week old to probably 7 or 8 weeks. So not for ages

they were getting faffy the bigger he got as they often came unstuck (tried water, salvia and nipple gel to stick them, salvia worked best and was easiest to get to haha) and I was worried he would choke on them.

there’s also the fact you have to fully expose yourself and stick them on then try get baby to latch so i didn’t go out and about much when I used them.

would definitely recommend trying some (I had cheap boots ones and some branded ones) if you want to carry on seeing if you can breastfeed

I used them for about 4 months with DS2. No problems and managed to find away to put them on without exposing myself. IMO, pretty easy to get used to.

@Lullabies2Paralyze the way she is feedingn now there isn’t a person in town who hasn’t seen my nipples so not too worried about that aspect!

Shes had two sessions with an osteopath. First one relaxed her enough to calmly keep feeding with her dreadful latch but made no difference to her actual latch.

@BabyFour2023 thanks for this. Did you stop after 4 months or transition off them?

Did either of you have any issue with supply when using them?

No I don’t think I had any supply issue but he did want to feed a lot. Not sure if it’s coz he wasn’t able to get as much out or just because of his age at the time. He’s 10 months and I’m still BF

Would recommend them, lots of different styles to try.

Why can't the tongue tie get snipped? I went and cried to a senior health visitor and then she agreed to refer my baby.

Top tip- make sure you have to correct address on Amazon so they don't get delivered to your elderly father Blush

I ended up using them for a whole year. Worked great for us

@ThreeFeetTall I stupidly listened to the advice of three different health professionals (surgeon, lactation consultant, osteopath) who said not to cut. I should have gone with my gut. Am now paying for someone to do it privately Monday (if I make it that far).
