I am losing the plot here! My ds is 3 and a half weeks old and has had a chest infection so has been on antibiotics for a week. His feeding dropped off from 30mins and a 2-3 hr break to 6mins every 30mins or so. He couldn't breathe through his nose so was bobbing off and on.
Now he is beginning to get better but I am now feeding every hour god sends and he still is unhappy. He goes rigid and frantically batters his head against my breast trying to latch on but arching away when I try and help
My dd had colic really badly and screamed for most of the first three months. I am paranoid it is going to happen again! I know I got through it last time but everything was going so well with ds that I felt I could bf whereas with dd I wanted to give up!
He appears to be latched on - no painful nipples, but he doesn't seem to have a mouthful of breast - large so difficult to see!
Tried to ring bf counselling lines no answer yet and am turning into a dribbling wreck.
Any advice welcome!!!!

You poor thing. Are your boobs very engorged making your let down v fast (in which case try hand-expressing a little before you start). Has he been checked for tongue tie?

Boobs are not too bad now - but were, however do spray milk everywhere if he comes off - is this normal?

What is tongue tie?

He has been putting on weight really well prior to chest infection - not sure now as weigh in on Weds

Tongue tie is where the piece of tissue (frenulum) that connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth is too far forward and tight, so they have problems lifting their tongue up to suck properly. It classically gives the tongue a heart-shaped tip, but in this age group is probably easiest seen when he's crying - you'll see the frenulum clearly if he's crying, and be able to tell if it's set back, or too far forward. Have a look in the mirror at yourself - lift your tongue up, see where your frenulum is (though be warned, tongue tie is hereditary so go by the position of the frenulum, rather than whether or not it just looks the same as yours). Tell me if that doesn't make sense!

If it is, you'll have to change your thread title to "Help, it's all going heart-shaped" ho ho ho. Sorry. Couldn't resist.
