wee sis had a baby about 2 weeks ago and is having a real problem getting baby latched on with her insy nipples. They do pop out eventaully but usually DD has lost interest by then. Any hints /advice?

I used to either pump a little just before a feed to draw them out or use nipple shields for the first few minutes of a feed, Didn't need to for long thank goodness cos it was a faff! After bf dd for a while they stayed out anyway so I haven't needed to do any of that this time around.

I second claireybees suggestions - and do reassure her that it does get easier, I had teeny little flat nipples too but 3 years of bf later and they now stick out like chapel hat pegs.

Has someone experienced like a lactation consultant checked her latch? In theory the shape of the actual nipple shouldn't matter too much, what's more important is the baby getting a nice wide open mouth and getting a good mouthful of the breast tissue in. The milk ducts are located behind the areola, and the baby's gums need to "milk" the breast, not the nipple. It's often easier for a third party to see what's going on than for the mum herself.

There are some great videos showing latch on the Jack Newman website here

will see if she's tried the shields. She's using a pump as has loads of milk but mostly getting it in via a bottle and getting stressed!
