However if they're on formula, they don't.

Surely this can't be right????

Wouldn't it be better to advise that you take your kids outside every day? That would top up the vit D wouldn't it? Surely better than advising we all give our babies vitamin pills filled with Go-knows-what.

DS had dalivit multivitamin and iron on prescription as he was a BF premmie. I was told if I used the nutriprem formula (also prescribed) that I could skip the supplements. Obv not quite in context but thought might be of interest.

So HealthyStart vitamins are free?

HAve not read all posts so sorry if I am repeating. I went to see dietician recently with DS2 aged 8 months because of DS1's food intolerances. She said that there are v new guidelines that say that children who are over 6 months being breastfed are recommended vit drops. I was a bit put out because (in my mind) it suggested that bf was not as good as formula but then, when I thought about it I assume that it is because they add things into formula. Anyway, I will be given them by the health centre....when they get any in. This was about 6 weeks ago so there is clearly no great rush on their part!!
Interestingly she also said that, since DS 2 is having his main milk feeds from me (morning and evening and usually at least one bot, usually 2, of EBM during the day)he can have a bottle of cows milk as an extra feed which has made life much easier.

Regarding vit-D deprivation - the only people who need to worry is those from african/asian decent, who cover up more often and do not expose their skin to day light enough.

Vit-D is available from Advacos, Cowes Milk, Mushrooms, Eggs, Fortified (added) to Bread and Cereals...

As said before, unless baby is getting sole nurishment from BF or FF there is no need to supplement as they will get all vit and minerals from a varied diet.
