wildwoman · 02/02/2008 23:46

ok how much vommit?

Ledodgy · 02/02/2008 23:46

Ha syour milk come in yet or is it still colostrum? When you say brown , how brown do you mean? Is it the colour of chocolate or a yellowy brown?

suiledonn · 02/02/2008 23:47

Not an expert by any means but heard that babies can swallow blood during birth and when they bring up some of the feed the blood can colour it brown.

BigBadMouse · 02/02/2008 23:49

(also not an expert) but have experienced this due to cracked nipples.

SlightlyMadShrek · 02/02/2008 23:49

What do you mean by brown vomit?

If you are looking at dried vomit, e.g on their sheets it could be dried blood. It could be from birth, but I would suggest it gets checked in such a young baby.

fingerwoman · 02/02/2008 23:49

belstaff, is it very dark brown or just yellowy brown? how is breastfeeding going for you?

there are 2 things I have persoanlly seen cause a dark brown vomit in a very young baby.
first was when baby had swallowed meconium and a few days later vomited all this nasty brown stuff up (when i was in hospital having ds1).

secondly if you are having probs breastfeeding and perhaps have cracked nipples. baby may have ingested blood that could make vomit appear brown

fingerwoman · 02/02/2008 23:49

I would def ring your midwife though

hunkermunker · 02/02/2008 23:52

Could be, as people have said, blood from cracked nipples - are you sore when you bf?

No experience of this, but have you checked the la leche site? link here

Best of luck

VeniVidiVickiQV · 02/02/2008 23:53

ring to check - but it could be blood from cracked nipples, plus colostrum isnt white by any means - it's a deep yellowish colour.

Could it be that?

hunkermunker · 02/02/2008 23:53

Speak to your midwife - can you ring labour ward now? With such a little baby, you should still be under their care and able to ring 24 hours.

You can also ring one of the bf lines listed on the right-hand side of the page here

belstaff · 02/02/2008 23:53

yes i do have cracked blood on nipples, only slightly weak brown vomit

SparklyGothKat · 02/02/2008 23:54

I remember when Callum threw up blood, I freaked out and then I realised I had a cracked nipple.

hunkermunker · 02/02/2008 23:56

It's quite likely it's that then.

How are you? How is bf going? Do you have any Lansinoh or other nipple cream for your sore nipples? Has anyone checked your baby's latch?

Congratulations on your new baby - and I hope you are healed very soon.

MeMySonAndI · 02/02/2008 23:56

Another vote for broken nipples here.

BigBadMouse · 02/02/2008 23:57

well that sounds hopeful - sounds like the cracked nipples causing a problem but I would definitely get a professional opinion on this with such a young one - just for your own total peace of mind...

procrastinatingparent · 02/02/2008 23:57

DS4 had this and the midwives said it was blood from the birth and not to worry. He did keep bringing it up for a few days though.

belstaff · 02/02/2008 23:57

yes that has reassured me thank you everyone

How are things now? Have you had a chance to speak to a 'professional' over the weekend?

Hope all is well
