Previous thread here. Just finished with mastitis and now have thrush. Having to treat DD (4 weeks) with oral gel. It's orange flavoured and has alcohol and sacharine in it. I have to give her 5ml four times a day, according to the Breastfeeding Network.

Whatever you really think, please tell me that this is ok. I am beside myself.

it's daktarin right? it is fine

both mine have had it

how are you feeling? are you treating your nipples too?

lulurose · 02/02/2008 20:46

Please make sure you treat your nipples too (you can get cream). My HV only gave me the daktarin for dd2 but it didn't solve the problem. Its so important to get you both treated.

gloriana · 02/02/2008 20:54

All 3 of my DS' have had to be treated for thrush when I was breast feeding and were treated with Daktarin oral gel. I had to keep doing this for weeks with DS1 as well as putting the Daktarin cream on my nipples. The combination of cream and the gel made me feel awful (to be 'polluting' my lo's) but none of the babies had any bad effects from it.

Is the thrush inside the breast? You'll know as you'll feel stabbing, shooting pains in the breast itself and not just on the nipple. If you think the thrush is in the breast, you should also be taking fluconazole tablets for 2 weeks.

Really hope this helps as I know how utterly awful thrush is. Will keep my fingers crossed that you get rid of it quickly.

I had it the other way round, thrush for ages, lots of pain when feeding from that side, eventually mastitis and antibiotics. And then it went away. Didn't have it with the second at all. DS and I both had antifungals to use, him internally and me on the nipple. I also used one of those plastic drip catcher things to keep the nipple aired.

Apparently, taking a balancing probiotic like acidofilus (Sp?) can help. I never did figure out how it was supposed get from my stomach to my boob.

BTW I BF both of mine until they were 9 months old. Sorry I can't be more help but I think you are doing the right thing.

Smamfa · 02/02/2008 20:57

G - oh I remember that pain now. All they way from the nipple to the armpit.

gybegirl · 02/02/2008 20:59

Just posted on your other thread but had to come over here and say well done you. Also to say www.drjacknewman.com is an excellent rescource for all things breastfeeding related. Hope things improve quickly

LittleMissMac · 02/02/2008 21:45

Poor you. Bear in mind it can take ages to shift, so don't start panicking if it doesn't disappear after a few days of treatment. It took around a month or more (!) to get rid of it from DS's mouth.

mimicakey · 02/02/2008 21:55

Hi, I also have thrush on one nipple. Have been using Daktarin on me but the doctor didn't give me anything for lo - does that seem strange? She has no symptoms apart from thrashing around a bit but is that because I have it or because she does?

fleacircus Of course it's ok, you have to get rid of it and get better! Well done for getting this far!

gloriana · 02/02/2008 22:32

Both of you should be treated as otherwise you keep passing it back and forth. Equally, you should be putting cream on both nipples even if you only have symptoms on one. Keep using the cream and the gel until you have been several days without symptoms.

Well done for getting this far and keep going - it can take 6 weeks to clear.

TiddlerTiddler · 02/02/2008 23:05

If you are getting stabbing pains in breasts, pls see dr for prescription for fluconozole. Otherwise, you spend weeks faffing around with gels / creams and the thrush takes hold in your ducts. if its in your ducts, you need the tablets to shift it. BFN has excellent PDF on this to bring to your doctor.

DD2 had it a few times in the early days but my gp never gave me anything for me, pharmacist suggested I put the daktarin on my nipples too - always worked for us. It is sticky though!

Thank you for reassurance - feeling much less hysterical now! I think coming immediately after the mastitis it just tipped me over the edge a bit. I'm still having problems latching her on that side, the nipple is bigger than the other, which I'd never noticed before, which I think is causing the problems. But it's getting better - I called the NCT helpline in a state on Monday morning and the volunteer I spoke to put me in touch with a local counsellor who came and spent two hours with us the same evening, which was just amazing. That helpline has been my lifeline over the last couple of weeks.

I'm using the cream for me as well as the gel, it is Daktarin. And it's still only in one breast and not even in DD's mouth, although I'm still treating her as a preventative measure. Not taking the fluwotsit, have lost all faith in my GP after he told me to stop feeding her while I had mastitis. But seeing him next week anyway for 6wk check-up so will raise it then if there's been no improvement with the cream.
