Neocate LCP / colic - HELP

AmberM2022 · 18/12/2022 15:07

So my LO is 11 weeks this week, he’s been on Aptamil Pepti 1 for about 4 weeks and now he’s seen a paediatrician yesterday who has now given him a prescription for Neocate LCP and he needs to be on this for 2months. She told me it really does taste vile and babies sometimes refuse it but i need to persist - so now i’m worried. My baby is already so unappy
and grumpy 24/7 all i get is screaming and crying all day, he is SO tired but will never go down for a nap for more than 10/20 mins. He poo’s about once per week and is uncomfortable the rest of the days and i’m scared giving him this awful milk will just upset him further. I know it’s in his best interest to take the milk and i will do it, i just wondered if anyone else’s babies have been on it and been okay and seen an improvement? i am really Praying this milk will help him in some way (it really will be a christmas miracle if it does😢) Thanks in advance!!

I had a very poorly DC2, and Neocate LCP turned out to be the only suitable formula.
Immediately after what we call “the incident” when he was stable and the PICU, he was given it and gulped it down like he’d never been fed. Then the novelty of “ooo food that doesn’t hurt me” wore off, he realised it tasted like buttholes. The paediatric dietician advised us to put a few drops of natural vanilla extract in it which helps mask the yuck. Worked a treat. We gradually reduced the vanilla and within a week or so he was drinking it without.

Yes we started on Nutramigen and moved to Neocate around 16 weeks I think. Absolutely no problems in getting him to drink it. When they’re still that young, their tastebuds aren’t that developed and if they’re already used to an allergy milk for most of their life it shouldn’t be too much problem transferring over.
I will also add Neocate themselves say there is a transition period where the baby might experience more wind than normal for a couple of weeks. We had this and then it settled and turned into a different baby. So just in case that happens, don’t worry as an increase in wind is expected.

Oh also it is super thin as well so you can thicken it with carobel however my had an allergy to that as well and since changing the milk we noticed the reflux didn’t bother him pain wise so we let him get on with it and accepted the sick. As soon as we started weaning and he could sit up unaided, reflux disappeared.

Thank you for that reassurance! when you say wind - top end or bottom end? Mine struggles soooo bad currently with bottom end wind where he screams in pain with it most of the day :(

Ahhh adding vanilla is a great idea - wouldn’t of thought of that. Atleast i can give it a go if we have no luck getting him to drink!

My baby went onto neocate from 8 weeks. He was on ordinary formula before. He took it no problem, in fact he guzzled like he was starving - which he was tbh. He had faltering growth, constipation, amongst other stuff due to allergy. He's 4 months now & he's a different baby. Life changing for us all.

Bottom wind which is horrible when they’re already suffering with it but it did settle with us just like Neocate said it would

So update - he’s started yesterday and has had about 6/7 bottles. He is quite sick on it and we had a really unsettled night more than usual. Did anyone else experience this?? How long does it usually start to help (if it’s going to)

Hi how are you doing with the neocate? We are on week 3/4 from pepti and wind improved bymut daughter developed awful eczema so I'm thinking she has a coconut allergy. Trying to get a hosp appt to discuss! She did settle after 2 weeks and wind / choking episodes improved but then skin got bad

AmberM2022 · 27/12/2022 17:18

@Bow2 Hello! He is actually doing so much better, so we are on our 2nd week i think now, and he has had a poo every single day bar one! which is amazing as before he went once per week and was in agony all the time! His wind has also settled down - believe me when i say before the milk it was HORRIFIC the smell was so bad even doctors couldn’t believe it!
But i know lots of people told me his wind would get worse on this milk and then settle down but we have been ok.
His skin is also really bad though!! on his arms and belly, i took him to the docs last thursday and they gave us some cream for it on prescription which is clearing it up and it doesn’t look as angry, but now your saying this i’m wondering if it is the milk too? I stop the cream on Thursday so i suppose if it’s still there and comes back it possibly could be the milk!

We went to the Dr who said it was such a sudden onset that unfortunately it's likely to be the milk, we are back at paediatrician Wednesday though so I've not stopped the milk and am using the prescribed moisturiser and 1% hydrocortisone for now though it looks so awful poor thing. Will be interesting to see what they say. Other things have definitely improved but wondering what is in neocate that she could be intolerant too. I hope your sons skin stays OK when cream stops 🤞
