Posterior tongue tie

My baby girl has been having trouble breastfeeding since she was 2 weeks old (she’s now 8 weeks). It’s been a true nightmare trying to get her to feed. We’ve been meeting with various medical professionals but have no real answers.

Anyway, we had an appointment with a breastfeeding counsellor today who was also stumped although she did give us some good tips for feeding incase her issues are due to undiagnosed reflux etc. However, at the end of our appointment she took a look at a video of our girl crying and said she thinks she might have a posterior tongue tie.

We have an appointment with a qualified tongue tie professional next week to get her properly looked at. Before going I’d like to get some insight into the experience of other mums with tongue tied babes. What were the signs that your baby had a posterior tongue tie and how different were things once the tie was released.

My youngest had a posterior tie. She cried pretty much constantly until it was cut. She would feed for short bursts but be on and off breast all the time, she made clicking noises, nipples were painful and compressed whenever she fed. She dropped weight shortly after birth. She would choke on saliva a lot. Lots of dribbling. Very snuffly. She was very reflux-y and colicky. I realised it was TT on day 2 but 11 medical professionals missed it so it wasn't cut until around 10 weeks. She seemed a lot happier and the crying reduced immediately. The other symptoms gradually improved and she started to gain weight. It does take them some time to relearn how to use their tongue.

@BlueMoon23 Thank you so much for your response! I can’t believe how similar this is to how things are for us just now (minus clicking while she’s feeding).

Here’s hoping this will sort things for her. 🤞

Hi how did you know that your little one had a tongue tie ? I have a 5 month old and I’ve said from day 1 that I think she is lip and tongue tied , cried constantly at start for weeks and was told it’s colic and reflux , she was constiptaed badly for weeks and just gave suppositories .. they then changed her onto nutramigen formula for suspected cmpa although no tests where done because she’s gaining weight .. she has been much better since changing milk but her nappies are just constantly runny whenever she does finally go , she 80 percent of the time clicks when feeding and milk dribbles out sides of mouth and also is very very gassy , bothers her badly at bedtime when I put her down .. just looking advice on what you think of the picture I managed to get when she was a bit younger ?

Def recommend you join infant tongue tie UK parent support FB group as they can point you towards private practitioners.
