Did you find your FF baby slept longer more quickly?

I'm not looking to discuss BF, sadly I can't do it as my nipples are totally flat and with DC1 the midwives basically said not to bother.

But with DC2 I will be FFing from the off - did you find your FF baby slept long stretches fairly quickly?

Sorry no.

But remember a baby is programmed to wake often and feed small amounts day and night.

We are carry mammals and as such our babies are born pretty helpless. They need to be near to us to survive so that's what their instincts lead them to do.

Pizzaandsushi · 08/12/2022 06:01

Nope! 9 months and his sleep is still shocking even with a routine.
some babies are just good sleepers and others aren’t. It’s mostly down to temperament

RebeccaCloud9 · 08/12/2022 06:05

(bf not FF so not totally helpful sorry but...) I have had 3 babies, all fed the same. Their sleep patterns have all been completely and utterly different. Pretty sure down to temperament not anything I've done/not done.

violetcuriosity · 08/12/2022 06:18

Personally I did, when I stopped bf at 3 months and moved to formula she started sleeping 7-7 pretty regularly without a wake up. She was my first baby though so probably had the unicorn gene. Currently 30
Weeks pregnant with number 2, I'm fully prepared for this one to teach me some hard truths 🤣🤣🤣

I can’t compare to a BF baby but my little boy was FF and has been ridiculously good. From 6 weeks he’d go from midnight til 6/7am then from 10 weeks he just went down at 8pm and would sleep for 12 hours, sometimes 13/14 hours even 😂 He’s done it every night since and is now a year and a half

PizzaPizza56 · 08/12/2022 06:39

BF baby here. Horrendous colic for first 12 weeks (no one got much sleep) but since then has done 8 to 6 with no night feeds/wake ups. He is massive though, maybe that makes a difference?

Noname99 · 08/12/2022 07:40

In my experience yes. BF was a disaster for me and baby. Moved to FF at 16 weeks and it was blissful. Baby went from sleeping no more than 1.5 hours to sleeping from 8pm till 7am almost from the first day I switched.
I think there some research suggests that the FF is more slowly digested and so keeps them fuller for longer and so FF babies often sleep for longer periods.
But as you can and will see from this thread, results can vary considerably !!! 😆

SirMingeALot · 12/12/2022 09:46

My second definitely did. First went down to one feed a night from about 6 weeks maybe, but then stuck at that for ages. Second was sleeping for a stretch of 8 hours plus by about 12 weeks, we hardly did any night feeds at all after that. DH and I were both EBF and were reliably informed by both mothers that we used to feed all night, so in this instance I doubt it was the genetics that did it! However, results may vary... my friend had two equally godawful sleepers, one was EBF and one FF from a couple of weeks.

alark · 12/12/2022 10:14

I BF'd for a few months then switched to formula, made 0 difference to sleep. He's still a crap sleeper now at 1!

Problemorno · 24/12/2022 14:38

In my experience yes, my FF baby slept better than my BF one. DD was FF and slept through from 12 weeks. DS is 6 months old, EBF and still wakes at least once.

Hohofortherobbers · 24/12/2022 14:43

Oh yes, switched Dc1 from bf to ff at 5 weeks and we all slept well immediately.

AmazonPrim · 24/12/2022 14:47

Yes. In my experience FF and they slept much better.

Marblessolveeverything · 24/12/2022 14:48

I FF both were great sleepers both were large. 9lb 12 and 10 4 so that probably had a hand in it too. Both ate, watched the cat and slept. Only exception was teething or the very rare cold home from creche.

upfucked · 24/12/2022 14:48

No.

upfucked · 24/12/2022 14:48

FF baby was just as crap at bf baby at sleeping.

karmakameleon · 24/12/2022 15:10

I breastfed two and formula fed one. One of the breastfed babies was the best sleeper.

BuffaloCauliflower · 24/12/2022 15:16

I know you said there’s no reason to bother, but flat nipples aren’t a barrier to breastfeeding, your midwife is misinformed (most don’t have good breastfeeding training)

The research generally shows that when formula feeding, the parents will report the baby sleeps more/longer but when they monitor the babies themselves there’s no real difference between formula and breastfed babies on average

Yes BFing is entirely possible with flat nipples.

Emmamoo89 · 24/12/2022 15:34

Bf baby slept through the night since 11 weeks. Its down to the baby how well they sleep.

WordtoYoMumma · 24/12/2022 15:36

Yes that was my experience. DD was mixed fed and DH would always have an easy night if I was away and she had formula at bedtime. When I breastfed at night she was very unsettled. I was so determined to breastfeed but would end up formula feeding more and more at bedtime cos I was so knackered.
