You'd think the Infant and Dietetic Foods Association could get formula preparation guidelines right, wouldn't you?

hunkermunker · 31/01/2008 23:13

And also because they know damn well that HVs and the like will swallow what they say hook, line and sinker Informed, my arse.

hunkermunker · 31/01/2008 23:14

Wotta lotta shit - we all know why they developed them, don't we?! Brand awareness and advertising loopholes!

moondog · 31/01/2008 23:27

Knobs,the lot of 'em.
Have you seen the crap about special 'night time' milk now??

hunkermunker · 31/01/2008 23:30

Yep.

Not suitable for babies under six months as it has potato flakes and rice starch in it.

But of COURSE babies under 6m will be given it

Crock of shit
no wonder so many HVs are clueless if they have this for learning information from

hunkermunker · 31/01/2008 23:49

This is quite interesting though

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 01/02/2008 00:09

god those ingredient lists are scary

kiskidee · 01/02/2008 02:41

i thought the 'nighttime milk' thing was going to be all scientifical, like serotonin or melatonin in the bottle. silly me. why didn't I think rice and potato starch.

sherbydrivinginhercar · 01/02/2008 06:23

What are dietary fibres?

hunkermunker · 01/02/2008 10:02

Kisk, lol at scientifical.

Fibre, I guess.

OP posts:
MrsBadger · 01/02/2008 10:25

fibre is the non-water-soluble bit of plant matter ie the bit we can't digest.

Lulumama · 01/02/2008 10:31

so looking at the chart, all formulas look very similar in composition, so why are certain ones ( APTAMIL ??) always recommended as easier to digest/ closest to breastmilk?

the nighttime milk is mashed potato in a bottle ,no?

i wish i had had mumsnet when i was having the DCs

Lulumama · 01/02/2008 10:32

have you emailed them to put them straight on the new guidelines for making up feeds??

Jackstini · 01/02/2008 11:05

Would be interesting to see average (I know there is no such thing really but...) breastmilk composition next to those tables

tiktok · 01/02/2008 11:06

LOL at mashed potato!

It's potato starch, in fact - I guess there is a factory process which removes the starchy (carbohydrate) bit of the spud and mixes it with the rice flakes and then chucks it into the skimmed milk and other stuff that make up the formula. Result will be a thickened, starchy formula, that still gets through the hole in the teat.

There must be a food scientist here on mumsnet who might know more about this.

Formulas are a commercial product and segmentation of the market is necessary to their commercial success - they cannot all jostle side by side in the market place and admit they are all basically the same.

It's a bit like washing powder - all basically the same, and they all used to claim that 'science' made them better than each other. Now, they realise that people have seen through/are sick of that argument, and so they concentrate on getting consumers to make a relationship with the brand, because of green credentials, nice perfume, special art sets for schools and so on.

Formula milks are similar, in that making a relationship with the brand is important, but they still use the 'science' bit as well. Spurious health claims are supposed to be illegal, but I note they are still making them.

MrsBadger · 01/02/2008 11:27

poorly presented but tables 2 and 3 have figures on human milk

hunkermunker · 01/02/2008 12:49

LOL at me getting my flakes and starch mixed up. It was late!

OP posts:
Lulumama · 01/02/2008 12:54

i thought the same

Jackstini · 01/02/2008 15:19

Thanks Mrs Badger - that's really interesting
