Cluster feeding or tongue tie or colic?

DD1 is 6 days old. The last 48 hours have been awful. When she's not asleep (on me) she's either feeding or screaming. This is during both the day and the night.

The first few days at home were fine, she seemed relatively happy, would be awake and not crying for parts of the day, but since day 4 its just been like having a whole different baby. Her screams are awful, she sounds in pain. Her whole body is tense.

I ended up calling the maternity advice line on night 4, who said as long as she was calm during feeding, everything was normal and this was likely just cluster feeding.

Day 5 carried on in the same way, alternating between crying, feeding and sleeping on me. Had a midwife visit who suspected tongue tie and wind as the culprit. (Ive been referred to the feeding clinic as a result and am awaiting a call about assessing the tongue tie). They recommended trying expressing as a top up.

Feeding wise - my supply was decent, it wasn't painful . I could get a decent latch but she just wouldn't stay on and so wouldn't end up getting any of the hind milk. She's lost 8% of her birth weight so far.

I hate seeing her so upset but feel helpless. The only thing that stops her crying is feeding but if it is more of a wind issue, thats probably not helping that.

Has anyone else experienced similar? What do you think the problem is? Is this all linked to cluster feeding or will this pattern continue, is she just an unhappy baby!?

Oops, accidentally clicked post! The reason I'm unsure is because this is happening during the day and the night, rather than just a few hours in the evening, and there seems to be no time at all when baby is settled and awake.

I'd try to see a breastfeeding consultant to really check latch and get one who is qualified to check tongue tie too (don't rely on any old mw or hv for tongue tie as they often pretend they know when they don't!)

For me though these symptoms were cows milk allergy so I had to cut dairy and soya from my diet

Cluster feeding is totally normal in the early days and can happen at any time of day. Baby has no idea whether it is day or night right now.

Head down to your local breastfeeding support group to have someone see you feed. Failing that give the NCT infant feeding helpline a ring.

If feeding stops her crying I’d feed as much as you can for now. Use Lansinoh at the slightest hint of soreness.
