Lead pipes vs bottled water

I realise that bottled water is to be avoided for babies and toddlers but we recently discovered that sections of our pipes are lead.

An investigation found that the lead content of our water is fractionally above the recommended amount when left to sit and safe if the tap is run for two minutes before drinking.

I was concerned about the lead pipes so we put bottled water in our son's sippy cup. He's 14 months old. He doesn't drink very much water at all, would never finish a whole cup over the course of a day even. He's still breastfed and quenches his thirst with breastmilk or cows milk mainly.

He's been vomiting for 4 days now. Some diarrhoea. No other symptoms. No temperature and seems happy other than when he's vomiting. He can't keep food down but keeps breastmilk down.

I've got it into my head that a week of bottled water has made him ill- am I being daft and he clearly just has a stomach bug? What's the best option, the bottled water or the water from our pipes so long as we run them a while before drinking?

Bottled water has a different mineral composition and can cause upset. Look at your water companies website, they will replace lead on their side, and you may get a grant to help with the cost on your side.

Meantime, run the tap for two minutes minimum and time it - its longer than you think.

Your water company may also be able to supply you with bottled tap water

Thanks. We've gone back to tap water when run for two minutes and will look into getting the pipes changed.
