HELP - 6 month old vomiting

Ftm, need some advice from those with experience.

I did take my baby to the doctor today she said he's likely got a viral cold, to keep an eye for dehydration but otherwise he seems fine.

My 6 month old is breastfed and was being weaned into solids until just over a week ago when he cut his first tooth. Few days later he got a cold and has been congested with a cough since, though that is now improving.

But yesterday he had diarrhoea and started projectile vomiting in the night, today he's done that 3 times and after I put him to bed an hour later I came up while he was fussing and he vomited EVERYWHERE soaking him the crib everything. Took him out stripped him to clean and while I was holding him I heard his stomach churning he started gagging I sat him up ( scared of him choking) and he spewed out a handful of mucus.

I don't think he's dehydrated as I'm feeding as best I can without over loading him with milk but his nappies as lighter than normal otherwise he's happy and alert, though sleeping alot in the day but has been since he got the cold.

Is this normal? Is this from the cold? Will it stop in a day or two? Anything I can do? And should I be worried?

Thank you in advance.

Bump- he's been sick again, I tried to give him a dreamfeed while he was asleep, 1 suck and again stomach made noises and he threw up.

Is my milk the problem? ☹️
His nappy seems empty last changed at 6pm so I'm worried he's getting dehydrated, but he has mainly been asleep

If he has no wet nappy by 6am latest, take him to check checked out. In the meantime, how is his soft spot? Check it isn't sunken. When you press his skin and it goes lighter, how quickly does the colour come back? It should be within 2 seconds. Can you/partner take turns to sleep with him upright on your chest?

Teaandcrumpets95 · 15/11/2022 21:49

@lawandgin fontella is fine, skin colour fine turn pink immediately.

Will definitely do that if he stays dry.

I've been holding him the past few hours, I don't think I can stay up all night tbh. He's fast off, would he not be okay in his crib? ☹️

If he will take the breast, keep offering it even if he vomits, if he latches on afterwards, just keep going. My 16 month old had several of these tummy bugs, brought home by my 5 year old. The advice I was given was if he latches on, carry on even if you know he will be sick. He will get better quicker.

I don't think it's your milk. Sometimes when he has a cold he will vomit but it isn't as bad as my 5 year old when she was a baby. Keep an eye on the nappies and if he doesn't feed for a long time and just sleeps then definitely get him checked out. At 6 months old, my first had a cold and rather just slept refusing to feed. We took her to hospital after about 24hrs of not really feeding where they fed her expressed milk via a tube in her nose and she perked up almost instantly.

He will be OK in his crib if it is in the same room as you. If he vomits in his sleep you need to be close to tend to him.

I'm sure he will be fine in his crib. I usually sit up with DD (almost 7 months) if she's unwell, but that's mostly just my own anxiety! Maybe just set alarms to check on him every hour or two? Definitely keep offering fluids though. If he's dehydrated, or heading that way, that could make him extra sleepy and then it can become a bit of a cycle.

lawandgin · 15/11/2022 22:05

@Teaandcrumpets95 also just to say my DD currently has a cold and she's definitely extra pukey (reflux baby) so it could just be that. All that mucus can upset their tummies.

Teaandcrumpets95 · 15/11/2022 22:39

@Notyetthere yea same room, half a meter from my bed, I'm sure I'll hear him (if I get any sleep at all that is) and he wears a breathing alarm on his nappy at night

@lawandgin thank you!

My dh says it's just part of him being unwell.

He is feeding consistently, I'm just concerned with how much is coming back up, tbf he was sleepy in the day before he started throwing up so I think he must just feel rubbish :/

@Teaandcrumpets95 yes he must do, poor thing. I think sometimes when they're poorly the mucus can drip down the back of their throat and hit their gag reflex, so it could be that. Hope he's better soon 🙏

Teaandcrumpets95 · 15/11/2022 22:55

@lawandgin thanks, me too.

And I hope your little ones cold clears up too, clearly not a fun time of year.

He's still asleep and last feed still in so far so 🤞

Can you stick a pillow under the mattress of his crib to raise his head a bit? Might help with congestion.

I love my oil diffusers, always stick a few drops in dd and ds when they're full of cold.

Teaandcrumpets95 · 16/11/2022 07:58

He wasn't sick over night 👍

But he was up every hour and a half feeding, so guess he's making up for it.

And he's filled his nappy, so am knackered but relieved and feel like this is the end hopefully

Great news @Teaandcrumpets95 - hope you've managed some rest today!

Teaandcrumpets95 · 17/11/2022 18:56

So he seems better in himself and is not being sick to the degree he was but he did spit up abit this morning ( more spit up than vomit) and has been absolutely fine all day and was just sick while standing in his bouncer.

I feel like we are definitely through the worst of it but should I be concerned for the odd occasion? No other symptoms and he's definitely hydrated. Or do I need to call the docs again tomorrow?

Why would you go back to the doctor's? Your DC is fine, the doc has had a look and said it's nothing serious, you yourself say they're better again today. Sometimes it takes a few days to recover from a sickness/other bug. It's the same with kids as with adults.

As you get more experienced with child illness you'll increase your threshold of what warrants medical attention.

The bf is great - my 18mo is recovering from a bug where he hasn't eaten solids for nearly a week, won't drink water/dairy milk but has been bf enough for no dehydration and regular poos. He's the youngest of 3 and I'm sure if it was the eldest (at this age) I'd have seen a doctor by now but there's no point; he's ill but not seriously and he has started to recover, all they'd say is to watch and wait.

Trust your judgement; if you think they're getting better then they 99.9% are.
