BF after 12 months - did your baby naturally reduce the number of feeds?

DD is nearly 15 months. I tried to wean her last week and we got down two/three feeds a day and then she got a tummy bug so weaning on hold and I'm still thinking about whether to wean or not.

Now she is back to feeding 4-6 times a day again, not at night luckily. So many babies are only fed twice a day at this age but did the babies naturally do that? I'm a SAHM I'm on tap. She is still not great at solid food although better than she was.

I think I could continue longer if I could get her down to morning and night feeds. She does demand should I just refuse during the day. I've tried distraction but I can't distract for hours on end.

Will the reduction of feeds happen naturally. She loves BF and also has.

try to refuse one feed at a time. Firmly say No and give her a cup or bottle of milk or water instead, this is waht I have done with both DC, DS bf till 15months and DD until 14months.

Does she use a dummy? This may help.

Mine was fed twice a day at 12 months but by my choice, not his! Don't know what he would have done naturally. Think Flier's advice is good. Is there a particular food she really likes? Maybe you could offer a snack when she wants a bf as well as water or milk. Organix biscuits were very handy in helping ds forget about bfing - when he got used to the dropped feeds, we reduced the biscuits (but he's a sucker for a biscuit, my ds ).

Im having the exact same prob with my 15mth daugther. Shes addicted to the breat and I love bf too but want her to eat meals with us & gain some weight etc
She wont touch any other milk but mine and wont take it expressed either!

My DD is just the same, however as I'm a SAHM I don't see this as a problem.

She feeds much more on days we are home all day maybe 6 feeds a day. If we are out all day, she can cope with just 3/4 feeds.

Of course if she gets ill or hurts herself, she comes back to dock as such.

I am pregnant (just 13 weeks)and she responded by feeding more than ever. I wonder when she will want to wean but I would prefer it to be her choice. So unless the feeds get painful, I will continue nursing on demand and see what the future holds

Hi Tapster, my ds is the same age as your dd. I remember you because you are anti baby whisperer, as I am!
Ds feeds about 6 times a day and also at night. I think the babies that have one or two feeds a day at this age have been encouraged in that direction. I still really enjoy being on tap. Have you read 'how weaning happens'? That has some ideas if you want to reduce feeds..

I reduced dd to 2 feeds a day just before she turned a year, but since then (will be 2 next week) she has upped them again. Every time she gets ill, or is teething, she wants to feed lots, and would happily bob on and off all day long given the choice.

So IME no, reduction doesn't happen naturally.
