Breast milk for sticky eyes - is it true?

DS (8 wks) has had sticky eyes since week 2. Someone told me putting breast milk in his eyes can help. Is it true?

Apparently.

robinredbreast · 29/01/2008 23:25

yes and you can use it for stuffy noses and spots too

B1977 · 29/01/2008 23:27

yes

Clary · 29/01/2008 23:28

yes it's truly wondrous stuff. Just squirt it in there.

Another trick I learned when I went to visit family in SA:

bicarbonate(sp?) of soda in a little bit of water and cotton wool

worked wonders for my DD

TheOldestCat · 30/01/2008 10:46

Yup, worked for us too! I expressed a little onto cotton wool and it did the trick. Hope DS's eyes are better soon.

LiegeAndLief · 30/01/2008 12:49

Yep, worked miraculously for us after weeks of gunky eyes (thank you MN!).

Bouncingturtle · 30/01/2008 13:26

Oh I have to give this a try - 5 week old ds still has gunky eye!

Interested about the stuffy nose?

Def works for sticky eyes - has worked here on a few occasions. Best to squirt directly into the eye then wipe with a clean finger to prevent it running down their wee face.

Ledodgy · 30/01/2008 13:43

You squirt it up a stuffy nose like you would saline drops then suck it out with a snot sucker aka nasal aspirator. It works wonders on baby acne too, ds2 started to get a few spots yesterday and I put breast milk on them and they went virtually straight away am going to try it on my face too when I next get a spot!

Naboo · 30/01/2008 19:48

do you think it will work on a gammy toddlers eyes?! mine keeps getting sticky eyes, it's driving me mad. i am so tempted to spray him in the face with my mammaries to clear it once and for all!

cmotdibbler · 30/01/2008 19:54

Its actually what my GP told me to do when DS got conjunctivitis ! A quick squirt in the eye, and bobs your uncle.
I even did my eyes (on cotton wool first, norks won't aim that well), and it sorted mine out.
Apparently in Sweden and Finland you squirt for nappy rash too.

mawbroon · 30/01/2008 20:38

Another one here who can verify that it works! I expressed a few drops into a shot glass and then poured it into ds's eye. I did this because if I got my nork near enough his face to squirt it in, he would be dancing about trying to latch on!! He was about 23 months or so at the time!

I decided that before I put it in his eye, I would try it in my own eye just to make sure that it didn't sting or anything. Except I forgot that I had my contact lenses in.....

squiggers · 30/01/2008 21:12

I did this with my LO and it was hysterical. Couldn't be bothered with sterilising etc so DH held DD on his lap whislt I tried to aim straight. Needless to say DH and I collapsed in fits of giggles and DD ended up with milk EVERYWHERE (except in her poorly eye!!) And also remember to close the curtains. I forgot. People just might wonder what you're doing! It really works though.

sushistar · 31/01/2008 23:47

Have tried using ctton wool soaked in milk, and definatly an improvement. I'm a poor aim, but will try dripping straight into his eye next! Thanks everyone - just shows what AMAZING liquid this milk is - you should be able to get it on the nhs!

I heard this on MN ages ago, and since then have tried using bm on nappy rash and newborns spots. Has worked everytime. I'd thought about it for dd's conjunctivitus, but wasn't sure if it would work. After reading this, I might give it a go. Can't do any harm can it?!
